from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
I heard from sources on other teams Monday that Gauthier was phoning around looking for help on defense. The thing is, he’s not alone. Tampa and the New York Rangers are among the other teams also looking for blue-line help. It just so happens that Cody Franson is available in Toronto, although I’m not sure whether any of those three teams has interest in him.
read on for more on the Canadiens…
Suprised the Leafs may want to move Franson? Remember this from Brian Burke back in early July?
via Eric Koreen of the National Post,
“Obviously from our perspective, was the key to that deal. He’s a 6-foot-5 defenceman who’s young. We think he has an offensive upside. He can really hammer the puck. He’s big. I think he really rounds out our blueline nicely.”

Wait, is someone insinuating that the Leafs don’t know what to do with some young talent?

Agreed. Although, unless they get something truly valuable in return, I’d much rather they deal Pilon Komisarek for whatever they can get and stick Franson in the regular. But both Burke and Wilson seem to have rose-coloured glasses on when it comes to Komi, so that’s not likely to happen.

Amazing. Absolutely amazing.
Only the Leafs could take a trade where they send out Bret Lebda and receive Cody Franson and Matt Lombardi back… and find a way to make you question if there was a winner.
Remember, this is the team that somehow managed to screw up the deal they got them Phaneuf and Aulie as well already. It’s like Toronto is the anti-Nashville for d-men or something.

How did they screw up the Phaneuf deal? Got rid of Stajan… that alone without any return makes them the clear winner.

Yeah, I was confused by that comment too

It’s kind of hard to screw up a deal in which one side gets multiple bags of used pucks for a former Norris candidate. It’s not so much that Toronto won that deal, more that Calgary lost that deal.

The Leafs can’t do much with Komo as he has a full no movement clause meaning no matter how poorly he does, he can’t be sent to the Marlies without his ok and that’s not likely going to happen.
Furthermore, under the terms of his contract, he has to submit a list of 12 teams every Sept. that he would accept a trade to should one be found to the Leafs liking so unless one of those 12 teams has something to offer the Leafs and that team wants Komo too, it’s not going to happen either.
Franson may or may not have talked his way off the team but all he can really do for himself is to stop whining and be prepared to play when called upon and seriously make Wilson and Burke take notice of what he can do when he’s on the ice

How about Franson for Sean Avery to the Rangers.

Amazing. He has looked a little out of place, but that is to be expected. He is for sure better than Komisarek, and I dare say Schenn at the moment. But definitely not as good as the other D. If they can move him and get something back why not - better than having him and not playing him. Plus they have Aulie in the A who is pretty much ready for the NHL (perhaps better overall than Schenn). Will be interesting to see how this plays out.
