Kukla's Korner Hockey

from Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star,
Matt Nichol’s midtown gym has been the off-season workplace of a long list of NHL stalwarts. But if the clientele includes millionaires, the surroundings are decidedly minimal.
Inside you’ll find none of the glitzy high-tech machines that anchor mainstream fitness clubs. Instead, the walls are lined with old-school implements such as climbing ropes, barbells and an assortment of medicine balls weighing up to 100 pounds.
The roof sometimes leaks, mice occasionally squeak, and the most popular piece of equipment in the room isn’t a treadmill or an exercise bike: It’s a 150-pound log fitted with iron handles. Nichol, a former power lifter with a chiseled physique, presses the lumber over his head with as much ease as glee.
“New guys will come to the gym and, honest to God, the log is like a magnet. They gravitate to the log,” Nichol says. “You could do the same thing with a barbell, but this is cooler, it’s different. Guys feel manly. They feel tough, ‘I just lifted a log.’ ”
