Before Meszaros was traded, the Bolts had told Murray they were prepared to give him an offer sheet, worth in excess of $5 million US per season, but Tampa Bay didn’t have the necessary compensation -_first-, second- and third-round choices in the 2009 draft - to make it happen.

But Murray says he’s glad the deal worked out the way it did because it would have served to drive up the salaries of defencemen similar to Meszaros.
