Flyers owner Ed Snider clears his throat regarding the Olympics, Claude Giroux’s Canadian snub

Philadelphia Flyers owner Ed Snider is most certainly an outspoken gentleman, and he had...Some things...to say about the Olympics after his team's 3-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, as noted by the AP's Dan Gelston:

''I hate them,'' said Snider, the Flyers founder.

He added: ''It's ridiculous, the whole thing is ridiculous. I don't care if it was in Philadelphia, I wouldn't want to break up the league. I think it's ridiculous to take three weeks off, or however long it is, in the middle of the season. It screws up everything. .. How can anybody be happy breaking up their season. No other league does it, why should we? There's no benefit to us whatsoever. If anything, I can only see negatives.''

Reminded the Flyers reached the Stanley Cup finals during the last Olympics in 2010, Snider laughed.

''Maybe I like them,'' he said. ''I forget about that.''

Claude Giroux, who scored an empty-netter with 20 seconds left, has plenty of time to rest during the break. He was snubbed Thursday by Hockey Canada when Martin St. Louis was picked as an injury replacement for his Tampa Bay teammate Steven Stamkos.

Steve Yzerman, the Canadians' executive director and Tampa Bay's general manager, chose St. Louis over Giroux and Pittsburgh's James Neal.

''It's a farce,'' Snider said. ''He's one of the best players in the game. It's ridiculous. He's better than half the guys on that team. Anybody that thinks that Claude Giroux doesn't belong on the Canadian team, they don't know anything about hockey as far as I'm concerned. It's politics, to a certain degree. He had to pick his own guy. His own guy is good, but Claude is better."

Continued with the usual recappy stuff...

No other league does it because no other league has the Olympics during the season. Plus hockey players love to play for their country in the Olympics. I doubt you can say the same about NBA or MLB players. Personally, I love watching Olympic hockey.

this guy is delusional.  I would agree that giroux at his best deserves to be on the team, But has anyone seen how he has played this season?  He’s been invisible.  Him scoring that empty net goal says it all about his season.  Bunch of useless goals.

Can anyone in their right mind argue that Giroux has played better than St. Louis at any point in this year?  Sure hes doing a lot better now when compared at the beggining of the season.  When st louis and giroux both got snubbed, st louis stepped it up big time and was arguably the best player over the last month or so.

Man, if that’s how Snider reacts to someone picking St. Louis over Giroux I wonder how he’d react to a really dumb decision—like giving Ilya Bryzgalov a 9-year contract and trading a future Vezina winner to make room for him.

Guess Ill be the one to agree with him.  Not to the point of insanity like Snider takes it, of course, but I dont like the Olympics, as its a completely political process and often has officiating worse than the NHL.  Its also another opportunity for the NHLs best players to get injured during a season that might already be too long at 82 games.

And while I love St. Louis, Giroux is a better skater which I think will be important on the big ice.  Also, to say that Giroux is invisible is a joke.  He’s a PPG player this season, even after going until November before recording his first goal.  He and Steve Mason are the only reasons the Flyers are anywhere this season other than the bottom of the league.

I’m not saying St Louis doesnt belong there, but I would have picked Giroux over him.

Giroux definitely deserves to be there.  After not scoring for the first month he’s tied for 11th in the league and tied for 6th among Canadians.

It’s not a mind-bogglingly moronic, does-this-guy-even-watch-hockey snub like that of Bobby Ryan, but it’s a snub nonetheless.  At the very least, it’s ridiculous to simply dismiss Giroux out of hand.

Ed Snider: continuing to be part of the problem.
