Flyers Could Use Thomas Vanek

from Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer,

Vanek, a rugged 6-foot-2, 207-pounder who is one of Buffalo's cornerstones, could bring the Sabres several prospects (Scott Laughton? Nick Cousins? Oliver Lauridsen?) and/or draft picks.

He would feel right at home with the Flyers because he was winger Michael Raffl's linemate with Austria at the 2013 IIHF World Championships.

"I've never seen anybody play like he does in front of the net," Raffl said after the Flyers practice Wednesday in Voorhees. "He's unbelievable."...

Yes, it would be risky to acquire Vanek - whose $7.1 million cap hit would cause the Flyers to make some auxiliary moves, like including Andrej Meszaros in the deal, to free cap space - because he could sign elsewhere after the season. The Flyers need to take that risk. Roll the dice and make re-signing him a priority. The cap is going up after the season, and the Flyers will have Kimmo Timonen ($6 million) and Meszaros ($4 million) coming off the books.

hahahaha Vanek “Rugged” Carchidi is the guy that tweeted during the Pens/Flyers playoffs series a couple years ago that ‘We just saw Crosby pass the baton of the best player in NHL to Giroux”

Every team could really use Vanek. The cap goes up next year and he’ll be a free agent. I can’t think of anyone since Hossa who might have the same impact and hype going into the postseason.

I’m sure Vanek is dying to go from a sinking ship like the Sabres to another sinking ship in the Flyers.  He will certainly be jumping at that opportunity.

The Flyers may be in more denial that they need a rebuild than the Flames were.  Flyers have slow defense and suspect goaltending at best.

Yeah.  We know.  What does that have to do with ANYTHING?

Because all the flyers are missing is another forward that scores. They have a great defense and don’t need any help with that.

I think they need Mikael Samuelson, clearly.

yeah they are going to lose Mezaros & Timmonen so they can go out & sign a F like Vanek, Yes he will want to go from a Bad team like the Sabres to a Bad team like the Flyers with a Horrible Owner & ridiculously bad GM LOL

This is going to be ridiculed, but it’s not wrong that Giroux is going to underproduce (or, depending on your perspective, produce to his actual level) until they can give him a linemate that draws nearly as much attention from defenders as he does (which Jagr and Mike Richards did early in his career).

A right-handed net front presence like Vanek isn’t that guy, but Carchidi is right that nobody on the current roster can do that.
