Flames Have Around $20M In Cap Space

from Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald,

With just five days to go until free agency, the Calgary Flames general manager simply can’t afford to waste any time — not with an estimated $20 million in cap space at his disposal to shop for players on the open market.

The draft is over, but the real work has just begun.

“We’re very busy,” Feaster says, emphatically. “I appreciate that there’s a sense that we’re just sitting here now and it’s fun and games. It’s not. We’re not happy with where we’ve been in the last three years.

“We’re not happy not making the playoffs.”

As no Calgarian needs reminding, the Flames have indeed failed to qualify for the playoffs for three years running. After a near-miss in 2010/11, Feaster promised to keep the group of guys together for their valiant effort down the stretch.

The same does not hold true this time around.

How could you sell CGY to an UFA?

Come uhhhh… play with Iginla for a few months until he’s traded

“?

Come miss the playoffs, but not enough to get a good lottery pick

“?

At least we’re not Edmonton or Columbus!

You might be able to get, say, a Schultz… but Parise, Suter, Semin, Carle, etc… you have to think there’s 0% chance of any of those even seriously considering CGY.  If they’re lucky, they might snag a Hudler I guess…

Speaking of Edmonton… Calgary seems to be turning into Edmonton South.  And that’s not a good thing.  What a mess.  No amount of cap room is going to help them…

It’s not the space under the cap Calgary fans should be contemplating, it’s the space between the ears of their GM and ownership that would have me most worried.

It’s not like Calgary has been just a tweak or two away from being dangerous.  They haven’t been particularly close.  Having a lot of room to make decisions when all you usually do is make bad decisions anyway doesn’t address anything.

Why aren’t they busy getting the most they can out or Iginla and Kipper?  Plus focus on who they will draft with there top.3 pick?
