Five Stars of the Week

NEW YORK (Nov. 3, 2008)—Anaheim forwards Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne, who produced a total of 28 points in four games as the Ducks posted a 3-0-1 record, have been named co-recipients of the NHL’s ‘First Star’ award for the week ending Sunday, Nov. 2.

Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas was named Second Star and Philadelphia Flyers left wing Simon Gagne earned Third Star honors.

FIRST STAR—RYAN GETZLAF/COREY PERRY/TEEMU SELANNE, ANAHEIM DUCKS

Getzlaf led all NHL scorers with 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in four games, highlighted by a club-record five assists in a 5-4 overtime victory over the Detroit Red Wings Oct. 29 and a one-goal, one-assist effort in a 3-2 victory over Calgary Nov. 2 that ended the Flames’ six-game winning streak. Perry collected nine points (two goals, seven assists), including a career-high 1-4—5 in a 7-6 shootout loss to the Vancouver Canucks Oct. 31. Selanne also had nine points (6-3—9), led by his 21st career hat trick—the most among active players—in the victory over Detroit. Selanne increased his career goal total to 560, tied with Hall of Fame right wing Guy Lafleur for 20th place on the all-time list. After starting the season 1-5-0, the Ducks are 6-0-1 in their past seven games.

SECOND STAR—TIM THOMAS, G, BOSTON BRUINS

Thomas posted a 3-1-0 record with a 0.99 goals-against average and .970 save percentage in four games. He began the week by posting consecutive 1-0 shutout victories in Western Canada, making 27 saves at Edmonton Oct. 27 and 31 stops at Vancouver Oct. 28. Thomas became the first Boston goaltender with consecutive shutouts since Apr. 3-5, 1999 (Byron Dafoe) and is only the second goaltender in NHL history to record consecutive 1-0 decisions (Florida’s Craig Anderson, Mar. 2-4, 2008). Thomas finished the week with 35-save efforts in a 3-2 loss at Calgary Oct. 30 and a 5-1 home victory over Dallas Nov. 1. He leads NHL goaltenders in save percentage (.944), is tied for the top spot in shutouts (two) and ranks second in goals-against average (1.83).

THIRD STAR—SIMON GAGNE, LW, PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

Gagne tallied eight points (three goals, five assists) in three games as the Flyers won two of three contests. Gagne recorded two goals and two assists in a 7-0 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers Oct. 28, notched two assists in a 3-2 overtime victory over the New York Islanders Oct. 30 and finished the week by tallying one goal and one assist in a 5-4 loss to the Edmonton Oilers Nov. 2. Gagne ranks ninth in League scoring with 14 points (eight goals, six assists) in 10 games.
