Fischler: PA Discovers Marketing, Part II

A new era in player-owner marketing relations appears on the horizon. If current plans jell, NHLPA members will be hustling The Game as never before. Launched this summer, the program features one “marketing” player per team who’ll orchestrate the idea. The player-league promotion already has received a big play in Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal and is being talked up by the likes of Marty Turco. “It’s part of an effort to generate awareness in the dressing room of how critical it is for players to promote the on-ice product,” writes SSSBJ’s Allan Kreda. It all sounds good but we won’t believe the program will work until the season starts and players deliver on their promise. They should start off by making themselves more available to the media for postgame interviews.
