First Thomas, then Backstrom, Nash and Hartnell

As Paul noted, Tim Thomas appeared to tweak his groin or some othe part of his "lower body" in the Florida Panthers' 2-1 loss to Philly on Tuesday, and while I was preparing to have my beard trimmed for the first time in six years, Pro Hockey Talk's Ryan Dadoun notes that Niklas Backstrom got dinged in the Wild's 3-2 loss to Nashville...

[T]he Minnesota Wild are reporting that netminder Niklas Backstrom is done for the night due to a similar problem.

Backstrom lasted just 11:14 minutes against the Nashville Predators and surrendered two goals on five shots. He sustained the injury when Nashville forward Eric Nystrom crashed into him and seemed to accidentally jam Backstrom’s leg against the post.

TSN's Bob McKenzie noted that Rick Nash left what is currently the Rangers' 7-2 loss to San Jose after getting hit high and hard by Brad Stuart...

And while we're at it, Sportsnet's Mike Johnston notes that Florida Panthers defenseman Erik Gudbranson was tossed for hitting Scott Hartnell (who is okay) from behind in Philadelphia's 2-1 win over the Panthers:

via Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

“It’s just a headache,” said Nash, who said he did not feel the same way he did when concussed in Boston last Feb. 12 on a hit by Milan Lucic that ultimately sidelined the winger for four games. “I didn’t feel it [right away], it came later.

“I just didn’t feel right.”

Nash, who had turned in a dominating performance a night earlier in Los Angeles, said he felt the force of the blow by Stuart — who received a two-minute elbowing minor on the play — across the right side of his face.

“It was a head shot,” Nash said. “Any time there’s a head shot you’re concerned when you feel the way it feels. It’s not a good feeling.”

I have also put up a different video of the hit, with a reverse angle of the hit from Stuart.

If Shanahan can ignore open ice blind hits to the head, this should be a non issue. Upper body to shoulder hit with the head snapping back. Nash is a pseudo star, so Shanahan may think he needs to send a stupid message.

Headhshot?

Maybe if Stuart’s elbow is actually his shoulder and Nash’s head is actually his manboob…

It’s the hard shell pads. The NHL needs to create new protective gear standards that protect the wearer, but cannot be used as a weapon to inflict injury. Bring back soft pads with no armoring and this becomes a non-issue. Hell, if even a clueless ape like Don Cherry can figure this out, why can’t the NHL?

Gary’s a lawyer; all he sees is lawsuits inbound that headline “The NHL is refusing to let us wear the best protective gear”.

Then he’ll be facing a lawsuit similar to what the NFL faced.
