False Economy

These have been interesting times in the National Hockey League's annual summer salary hostilities. Did anyone expect, 25 days into the free-agent frenzy, that some players' wages would rise so rapidly under the new salary-cap system? Wasn't this system supposed to temper the temptation that some general managers have to overpay the game's elite? And how about how swiftly the market was set for young players?
