from Patrick Rishe of Forbes,
Is there any sports executive who comes off as being more arrogant, snotty and unlikable in professional sports than NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman? You couldn’t find 3 NHL players today that wouldn’t pull a Hanson brothers attack on Mr. Bettman if they thought they could get away with it.
That said, it is aloof – and standard negotiating rhetoric by the way – for Donald Fehr (the NHLPA’s executive director and former long-time leader of baseball’s powerful players association) to suggest that the NFL and NBA lockouts from 2011 should not have any influence upon the direction of the NHL’s current labor negotiations.
Here’s the simple reality of the matter:
- Perhaps what goes on in other sports shouldn’t matter from a financial standpoint, but it does matter from a practical standpoint if there is evidence that the current model is causing more teams than not to lose money. This data from Forbes suggests this could still very well be true in the NHL.

The first thing they need to do, if they already haven’t, is figure out what HRR is. That seems to be a major sticking point. The owners need to lay it all out and say “here is what we bring in” and do it by a team by team basis. I know the owners gave the players some information, but I don’t believe it was all of it. Once thats figured out then they can agree on a %, and get this thing rollin.
IMO, teams that lose money shouldn’t be allowed to sign players to ridicolous amounts of money, i.e. Minnesota. They should be capped at what they are allowed to spend on a contract, length wise and money wise. If I were an owner of a team that made money, and had to share my pot with a team that doesn’t make money, and that team is signing ridicoulus contracts, i’d be pissed. Also if I were a player, I wouldn’t allow the salary rollback, unless I was allowed to holdout if I didn’t like my contract, i.e. NFL. Theres gotta be some give and take on each side, but there needs to be more give from the owners this time, imo.
Either way get this shit done so there a GD season.
