Evening Line

Of the 42 players to score 500 goals, only 15 managed the first 500 with the same team: Jean Béliveau, Mike Bossy, Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, Guy Lafleur, Mario Lemieux, Stan Mikita, Mike Modano, Gilbert Perreault, Maurice Richard, Joe Sakic, Bryan Trottier and Steve Yzerman.

It’s funny how nobody ever asked Béliveau at the end of his career, or Lemieux or Richard or Sakic or Yzerman, why they didn’t want to move on to greener pastures when the fortunes of their current teams fell on hard times. It must be a sign of these mercenary times – that the motives of someone who demonstrates loyalty and commitment to an organization are questioned, not applauded. Strange how priorities can be misplaced.

Yeah, really funny since Beliveau won the Cup in three of his last four years, Richard won the Cup in all of his last five years. when Lemieux retired the first time the team was still decent and when he returned he was part-owner, and Steve Yzerman retired having been on a team that made the playoffs every year for about 15 seasons.

So yeah, funny that they weren’t asked that question but that Jarome Iginla has, being that he was the best player on a team that has been mediocre for his entire career save for one year.

Funny that people wonder why a great player wants to stay on a mediocre team rather than going to a contender.  Funny that people assume great players would like a chance to win something sometime…

I don’t think Duhatschek knows what the definition of ‘funny’ is

Fvck you Duhatschek.  Iginla is one of the greatest captains in sport, and the majority of hockey fans feel disappointed at the thought of him not winning a cup.  Much like Gilbert Perrault, who did get asked often about seeking the grail as an older free agent.

Duhatschek is practically the only MSM member worth reading/watching any more, and I guess we’re all entitled to a weak effort once in a while… the article overall isn’t bad, but the lede is pretty soft:

Jean Béliveau: won Cups with the Habs
Mike Bossy: won Cups with the Isles
Wayne Gretzky: won Cups with the Oilers
Bobby Hull: won a Cup with the Hawks
Gordie Howe: won Cups with the Wings
Guy Lafleur: won Cups with the Habs
Mario Lemieux: won Cups with the Pens
Stan Mikita: won a Cup with the Hawks
Mike Modano: won a Cup with the Stars
Gilbert Perreault: NEVER won the Cup
Maurice Richard: won Cups with the Habs
Joe Sakic: won Cups with the Avs
Bryan Trottier: won Cups with the Isles
Steve Yzerman: won Cups with the Wings

So of all those players that are used to show loyalty instead of fleeing late in their careers to win a Cup, only Perreault never won a Cup. And what’s more, Perreault, Hull, Mikita, and Modano are the only four to have not won MULTIPLE Cups with that team.
