In an ideal world, (Taylor) Hall wouldn’t have to fight, because that’s not what he’s good at. But to protect him you would need the repeal of the instigator rule, which would open the door to a new generation of Dave Semenkos. And since Bob Probert was just found to have had the degenerative neurological disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), and since part of that disease can likely be attributed to his 240 career fights, bringing back the mastadons seems like a bad idea, too.
So we come back to the same old place. Protect yourself, kid, because the NHL will only do it if it’s Trevor Gillies taking unashamed runs at your head, or Chris Simon stomping on your leg. It’s how hockey works, and it’s all fun and games until somebody gets hurt.
