“I don’t have any grand illusions or false hopes or anything like that.  “I believe we can be a playoff team.”

“To be quite honest, there’s a lot of people in your industry who have said we wouldn’t make the playoffs.  What’s going to change what they say?

“We’ve got to believe in what we believe in.”

-Darryl Sutter, GM of the Calgary Flames.  More on the Flames from Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald.

I mean really, what else is he going to say?

“My slightly above average team played out of their minds one year and made it clear to the Stanley Cup Finals. Ever since then, I’ve been operating under the illusion that we’re just one piece away. I totally believed that one piece was Jokinen…or maybe it was Tanguay, I forget. That’s why I brought them both back a second time, just to cover my bases. I felt maybe I didn’t fully grasp the complexities of coaching in the ‘new’ NHL, so I brought in a guy who hadn’t coached a winning team in years…but hey, Iron Mike is a really cool nickname. The only thing that could be better than that would be if I hired one of my brothers. Lately I’ve been doubting my ability to manage the salary cap, so I found one of the few guys who was worse at it than me and made him my assistant GM. I figure his team beat mine in the SCF, so he must know what he’s doing. Wait, that was back *before* the lockout, wasn’t it? Dammit!”
