Marc Savard could not be a more pathetic figure during his Boston media meeting earlier this month, discussing post-concussion syndrome.

Without question, Savard’s future hockey-playing career is in grave doubt. His inability to fully suppress tears testified to the depression that engulfs a superior NHL talent. Meanwhile, a fully effective concussion cure remains as elusive as the culprit who thrust Savard into this unenviable state.

Matt Cooke remains a Penguins regular, a human torpedo on the ice, doing “his job.” The Pittsburgh agitator has paid his price in NHL justice while Savard questions whether he will ever have the luxury of taking another turn on a big-league rink.

One wonders if there could have been a better result for both victim and culprit.

This league already suspends based on outcomes rather than intent. They might as well admit that, then suspend repeaters until the victim can return at 100%. Done.

and yes, I realize this means Detroit would be without Bert. BFD.

I don’t know what’s more pathetic; Savard’s plight, or the fact that Nick Boynton received a stiffer penalty for threatening to induce violence compared to actually doing it like Matt Cooke.

If the NHL actually had someone with a brain and intestinal fortitude in charge of player discipline the NHL wouldn’t have half these problems.

While idiots like Cooke, Downie and Orpik continue to circle the waters for their next victim, true talents, that actually attract fans to the sport, are sidelined shaking off the effects of such cheapshot artists.
And meanwhile, not a whisper is heard from Colleen Campbell’s perch.
The only sound that can be heard is the faint ‘tic-tic-tic’ coming from his ‘Wheel of Discpline’.

“Good news Orpik, the finger landed on ‘Shame on you. Now get out of here you little scamp!’”

Couldn’t agree more redxblack.
If there’s no injury on the play, no suspension.

Just look at last years finals. Scott Hartnell nearly took Kopecky’s head off with an intentional elbow to the dome. No penalty. No suspension.

Fans would have an easier time figuring out the Phoenix mess than trying to make heads-or-tails of the NHL’s disciplinary structure.

Oh wait, it turns out it’s easy:

Regular Season:
Is the accused from Pittsburgh? If Yes = no suspension.
Are you Chris Pronger? If Yes = no suspension.
Is the victim injured? If Yes = 1 game.

Playoffs:
Is the player dead? No = no suspension. Yes? = 1 game suspension.
Is the accused Chris Pronger? Yes=Award Conn Smythe.

*#$%@& Matt Cooke.  I hope the Bruins go March 26th, 1997 on him every time they play.

Also, why in God’s name did Savard play in the playoffs?

Real discipline against the NHL’s flagship team?  Not as long as Bettman is around.  I’ll echo what I have heard here at KK numerous times…Love hockey, HATE the NHL.

Tragic.  Marc Savard is one of the NHL’s brass that is in the prime of his career, we may never see him play anymore as a result of this garbage.

As for Matt Cooke, he has a laundry list of guys that he’s taken out over the past few seasons that need to be pointed out until he’s suspended in a reasonable manner.  It’s ludicrous that he continues to see the rink with little reprecussion.

Remember him trying to blade Osgood in the cup finals?  He’s a friggin loon.

The resume that comes to mind off the top of my head (ed: Penguin nuts, save your rants over the first two, the fact is that he was involved in a season ending/mutli game incident is all I’m pointing out):

- Andrei Markov (MTL)
- Milan Michalek (OTT)
- Erik Cole (CAR)
- Marc Savard (BOS)
- Mathieu Roy (EDM)
- Artem Anisimov (NYR)

I hope Downie breaks Crosby’s leg this year.
After Downie comes back from his 1-game suspension and Crosby spends the next 10 years rehabbing a shattered knee, we can all talk about how it was a ‘hockey play’ and Crosby and Pens fans should suck it up.

P.S. Most Wings fans think Bert should have been kicked out of the league. Very few will argue that.

Meanwhile, if Matt Cooke did that out on the street, his skate blades would get very dull.

Cooke doesn’t play hockey, hey plays irritant, a job on the fringes of the game of hockey and one that isn’t necessary.  There is currently no dirtier player in the league than Cooke and the sooner he retires / is forced to retire, the better it is for the sport.

I sincerely hope that Downie does NOT break Sidney Crosby’s leg though.

What Ovechkin did to Gonchar was a hockey play too.

What Downie did to Crosby last season?  Also a hockey play.

There are hockey plays that have no place in hockey.

Ovechkin went for a check on Gonchar, trying to take the body after a pass (similar to Cooke taking the body after a shot by Savard)

Downie and Crosby were fighting for the puck.

Those are just as much hockey plays as what Cooke did to Savard.  Or does it not count because you’re a homer?

Can’t argue with idiots J.J.  we know what it is, the players know.  Cooke knows.  He’s gonna end up getting McCarty’d one day, one day soon, and I garauntee he’ll calm down, he’ll think twice before ending someone’s career.

I remember in the playoffs (I think, could’ve been in the run leading up) the wings were putting on the pressure in a big way (if someone knows the game, will you please post it) and Lids got the puck at the blue line.  He winds up, has a chance to put a laser on goal, the lane in wide open sans for one player who bravely goes down, facing Lids, to block the shot.  Lids is already wound up and on the way down, sees what going on and DOESNT SHOOT.  I’m pretty sure it was a power play, he had an opportunity to score, saw that taking the chance to score (to win) wasn’t worth the career ending injury he’d likely have inflicted if he shot that puck.  Class, pure unadulterated Red Wing Class.

Just because you CAN do some things, doesn’t mean you SHOULD.  Hockey players are highly skilled individuals at the NHL level.  Once in a while I could see a freak accident, but a record of injuring players.. come on..

It’ll come back around to him soon, hockey players never forget.

well, being a pens fan is like believing in the easter bunny, santa claus and the tooth fairy ...

but if there was ONE player who did that ... then it’d be lidstrom. hard to argue with that, don’t you think? this guy has more class than the whole league could ever hope to amass in a hundred years’ time.
