I hope the career season and All-Star nod aren’t going to his head
and Duclair doesn’t miss out on a deal that could leave him truly set for life.

This is a player who has bounced around a lot and is not quite a kid anymore.

Tortorella has his types and specific demands, but he had no use for Duclair;
basically seemed to think he couldn’t do more than pot a few highlight goals.
If that was the only coach and team where things didn’t work out it would be one thing.

I’m sure Ottawa is bidding low on their own players, because they are Ottawa.
But if Duclair has no experience doing this and is going off one standout offensive season, he may not understand his actual value and leverage. This is a year in which Holland just spent two high picks on (I think) an overall better, higher-upside winger plays a similar game, and said see-ya when it came to qualifying. Sure Edmonton has cap issues, but Ottawa has internal payroll issues.,This is a market glutted with more younger UFAs than we’ve ever seen. Duclair could get stuck taking a one-two year near-minimum salary if he keeps thinking he’s going to get a big, longer-term salary in this flat-cap market flooded with cheap options.

While he may not know the exact dollar figure. He has comparables that give him a range of dollars. I have no faith in a label earned under Torts, on an Arizona team during the time when the NHL was threatening to move the team, nor from Ottawa’s management regarding a contract.

Everyone assumes it’s a monetary thing, but what if it was a length of the deal thing for a guy that has bounced around? Maybe he wanted security to stick around somewhere in the form of a 4-5 year deal and Ottawa wants 1-2 year deal. Neither side was willing to budge.

I hope the Wings sign him. Simple as that. 20 goals 40 pts. On a good team he’s a 3rd liner. On the Wings 2nd. He’s young enough that he might still not have hit his peak. If the Wings are using Arizona or Ottawa as the basis of determining NHL talent the Wings deserve to stay in last place for years to come.

I can’t fathom Yzerman wanting a very streaky,
one-dimensional offensive player, let alone one with
delusions that he’s a core part and leader based on one season
where everything went right. And especially not after just jettisoning
a similar but higher-end version in Athanasiou. And especially with a player like
Fabbri who has upside but is also sort of one-dimensional so far already on the roster. And especially if Duclair expects to get paid and/or a longer-term
deal. I don’t think Duclair is safe to project to 20 goals and 20 assists.
He’s capable of that. But he’s also capable of 10 goals and 5 assists.

There are a lot of things Arizona and Ottawa have gotten wrong.
But that doesn’t mean Duclair is one of of them.
Add the Rangers who let him go, too, after one season of a bit
of offensive flash and not much else. I’d like to see a player like this get rewarded for the feel-good season he just had. It just makes me leery when a gig without a ton of leverage expects a lot without seasoned representation talking the lead.

Damaged goods. I’d rather have AA than Duclaire though they seem to be one in the same.
