The Detroit Red Wings' pursuit of Petr Klima and his subsequent defection from Czechoslovakia is detailed in a new book by author Tal Pinchevsky, a staff writer and producer for NHL.com who has also written for The Hockey News and ESPN The Magazine.
"Breakaway: From Behind The Iron Curtain to The NHL – The Untold Story of Hockey's Great Escapes" chronicles how some top players escaped communist oppression to play in the NHL.
Several Red Wings and are featured in the book. They include Slava Fetisov,Igor Larionov and Sergei Fedorov as well as Klima.
But while Fetisov and Larionov were granted a release from their teams in Russia to play in the NHL, Klima and Fedorov had to defect.
