Carolina left wing Erik Cole returned to Raleigh on Sunday to be examined by team doctors after injuring his neck while being driven headfirst into the boards by Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik during a 7-5 Hurricanes victory Saturday night. Rather than flying Sunday to New York, where the Hurricanes play the Rangers on Monday night, Cole went back to North Carolina to be seen by a neurologist and other physicians.more update 1:15pm, via TSN,
Sources tell TSN that while the Hurricanes are still waiting for the official medical report from a Pittsburgh hospital, where Cole spent Saturday night after being hit from behind by Penguin defenceman Brooks Orpik, the prognosis is not good and that Cole is likely to be sidelined a minimum of two months, perhaps even longer than that. Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that forward Erik Cole has a compression fracture in a vertebra in his neck and is expected to miss at least the remainder of the regular season. Forward Andrew Ladd will be recalled from Lowell of the American Hockey League tonight and will be available to play Monday night in New York against the Rangers.
