Early Morning/Late Night Trade Talk

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

- Keep an eye on the Los Angeles Kings if and when the Calgary Flames and Jarome Iginla decide to begin divorce proceedings.

While it’s been widely (and accurately) reported that Boston and Pittsburgh have interest in the Flames captain should he become available, I believe the Kings would be right there in the mix as well and could be willing to dangle young backup netminder Jonathan Bernier. ...

- Sources around the league tell ESPN.com that Canucks GM Mike Gillis has been very active making phone calls over the past 7-10 days, checking in with nearly every team in the league to see if there’s any fit for a trade....

Vancouver desperately wants to find help at center....

- The New York Rangers aren’t necessarily shopping winger Marian Gaborik, but he’s indeed available if it helps them achieve some of their targets on the trade market.

The Blueshirts covet a right-handed, top-four blueliner and would also like to add a couple of bottom-six, grinding type forwards....

more on each of the above topics plus other notes of interest...

Kenny, Filppula is a perfect fit for the Canucks. Get on the phone. They have better D prospects in waiting than the Wings do.

Why would the wings trade for a D right now?

Another team that I believe has some level of interest in Iginla is Detroit, but the Red Wings have to figure out if they’re actually buyers come April 3 depending on where they are in the standings.

Filpula + 2nd, 3rd and 4th picks next year for Ingila, and Franzen + first pick if Ingila resigns with the wings
DO IT!

Zqto - either that’s a hilarious joke, or I’m incredibly thankful that you aren’t the Wings GM.

What has been the…largest issue for the Wings the past, oh, 3 years?

Well, with the exception of the last game, the main problem lately has been scoring goals.

It was a joke, I dont think you can put a player as a conditional part of a trade

But If possible, and I were confident I could resign Ingila, I would definitly make that trade

Oh, and Im not even gonna comment on the people that thinks defense is the Wings worst problem…

Even Garth mocked me before the season started, when I predicted our defense were gonna be much better than everyone was dreading!
But how on earth can people still think after the last few games, that defense is our main issue??  we have ZERO offense going on… Our last 3 or 4 goals on 5x5 have been fluky goals, very lucky… We have had a bit of perimetral pressure for a few games, but we cant seen to get away from the boards anytime we are on the offense

Meh…one defensive breakdown leads to a goal scored. We don’t have any defense that can move the puck (sans Kronwall and Ericcson on a good day). We don’t have anyone other than Ericcson that can reliably eat minutes (Kronwall’s game suffers too obviously when he plays more than 20 minutes a night).

The offense will figure itself out if A) Babs stops fuching around (which won’t happen) with the lines and B) if the defense can actually play a transition game.

Exactly.

12 goals for in the last 8 games.  Meanwhile, in that same stretch they’ve only given up 15 goals again, and if you take away the five by Calgary, it’s 10 goals in seven games.  Hell, if you go as far back as Feb 14 then it’s 18 goals against in 10 games.

If we can hold the opponents to less than two goals per game on average then we should be able to have a better record over that stretch than 3-5 (or 5-5 in the past ten games).

Babcock’s fuching around explains why Pavel’s line isn’t scoring, but what about the rest?

If Iginla leaves Calgary, it’s going to be for a contender, not Detroit.

How easy is it to shut down a one-line team?

Point being that the defense HAS figured itself out, while the offense has floundered.  It hasn’t figured itself out and there’s not sign that it’s going on its own.

Wings transition game has been a mess, and its not because of Lid’s departure
It has been a mess for a few years, and I do think that’s actually our major problem

EVERY game a team putz pressure on the Wings, we have trouble, and we never seen to get the amazing breakaways the other teams get, when we put pressure on them

And this have been happening for more than 2 years, but Lidstron actually made it not that exposed… Now, without Lids on the lineup and with no one to give amazing passes from the back end, its showing, and its showing BAD…

And the fact that the entire team has become more defensive oriented to make up for the lack of defense equating to less goals scored means they need a top 6 forward and not better d-men?

Well…I agree Pav needs an actual winger and Franzen should just go to the damned net…

All that said…with better D I think the Wings’ style opens back up to something resembling what we’re used to seeing.

But I don’t claim to know it all; just my opinion, and that wasn’t meant to be HiHDer… passive-aggressive.

MrFluffly, I agree, as I posted just now, a transitional D is certainly one of the Wings priority
But I can dream of having Ingila on the Wings roster, can’t I?

lol

Oh is that a fact that this is the cause of the lack of offense?  Because when I’m watching the game and seeing Datsyuk’s offensive wizardry resulting it gimme chances that Abdelkader just can’t find a way to tap in, I always complain about the team defense limiting the offense, not the lack of offensive talent limiting the offense.

Clutch playoff goaltending.

Last year, though, it was a complete lack of offense.

Anyway, I don’t think the blue line has been Detroit’s main problem in any of the past three years, much less all of them.  The problem with Detroit isn’t that they have a glaring weakness, it’s that they are down across the board.  They are worse at forward, at D and in goal now than they were in 2008 or 2009, especially as far as the playoffs go.

Since my comment kicked this all off…

As HIHD says, the Wings are down in all areas (except maybe in net). Improvement is needed across the board. But the hardest thing to get are #1 defensemen, and that is the Wings biggest missing piece right now. It’s clearer now than it has ever been what Lidstrom did for this team’s offense, not just its defense.

I was half-kidding about specifically making a trade with Vancouver. The bigger point was, if we can turn a guy like Filppula, who is wearing out his welcome and looking replaceable from our logjam of skilled forward prospects, into more defensive prospect depth, that’s a good thing to do. From the big club on down, the least depth is at D. In goal there’s a legitimate prospect in Mrazek, and up front, we all know about Tatar, Nyquist, Pulkkinen, Jurco, Shehan, and Jarnkrok.

And if I’m going to pay a boatload for a forward on the trade market, make it Corey Perry, not Iginla.
