Ducks Won’t Chase Suter

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog, On the surface,
Suter figures to command at least $7 million annually when he hits the open market on Sunday and it would make perfect sense for Ducks GM Bob Murray to make his pitch first thing in the morning. It’ll be tough to outdo Detroit or Philadelphia or Minnesota or even Nashville but it would at least say that you’re serious about addressing the glaring need on the blue line.
But the reality is it’s more that the Ducks will try to reel in some smaller-sized fish instead of the shark.
Murray isn’t going to comment on who he plans to target but it is likely that he’ll spend some of that $31 million to get a defenseman. But the target list figures to be the second tier and that dwindled by one Wednesday with Calgary trading for the rights to Washington’s Dennis Wideman and then signing him to a five-year deal worth $26.25 million.
Who is part of that second tier of rearguards after Suter? Florida’s Jason Garrison, Ottawa’s Filip Kuba, Philadelphia’s Pavel Kubina and Matt Carle, New Jersey’s Bryce Salvador and Vancouver’s Sami Salo.
The third tier would feature Dallas’s Sheldon Souray, Montreal’s Chris Campoli, Carolina’s Bryan Allen and Jaroslav Spacek, Nashville’s Hal Gill, Boston’s Greg Zanon and Calgary’s Cory Sarich.
