Don’t Waste Your Time With An Offer Sheet For Ryan Johansen

from Aaron Portzline of Puck-Rakers,

Along with Umberger's potential trade, Johansen's resigning could be the story of the summer for the Blue Jackets. He's an RFA, yes, but he's not going to sign his qualifying offer. Don't be silly. He's going to get paid, it's just a matter of time. And team. As of July 1, all 30 teams are free to negotiate with Johansen and his agent, Kurt Overhardt. Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen said he does not see July 1 as a deadline, and he doesn't view the potential of an offer sheet as a risk. "If he signs an offer sheet, he signs an offer sheet," Kekalainen said. "Our ownership is strong, and as I said before, we would match any offer he could possibly sign. If somebody wants to waste their time and effort on that, that's fine for them. We'd just match it and keep the player."

So if you’re a jerk GM (Holmgreen), you give Johansen an offer sheet for a reasonably obnoxious amount of money.  Johansen will sign it, because he knows that either way he’s going to be paid a fat sum.  Then the BJ’s will apparently match it and have less money to spend on other players, which is beneficial for all other teams.

Holmgren’s out of the pic now.  Ron Hextall’s calling the shots as GM.

They may actually make a smart decision this time.  Of course, I say that facetiously.

I absolutely hope someone offer sheets Johansen.

Here’s the thing:  Jarmo coming out and stating that outright is BEGGING for someone to do it.

C’mon Winnipeg, do it…

I would like to think anyone in the Metro division would sign him to a ridiculous offer sheet.  Columbus signs it, then they have no room to maneuver and thus become a non factor.

Why do all teams say this?  Sounds so stupid, like they are daring someone to offer something higher.  Sure they could match, but why wouldn’t they sign him for less and sounds more reasonable.  THere is absolutely no benefit to going this route.  They alienate their player by playing hardball and will eat it later on .  Look at pk subban.  He wanted like an 8 year deal at 6 million before, and bergevin made him go for a 2 year deal, which really amounted to a 1 and half year deal because of the lock out and with most of the money on the 2nd year.  Now he has to probably give subban 8-9 million a year on an 8 year deal.  I bet he is kicking himself in the ass right now.  How bout just pay the guy reasonably and not deal with all the headache afterwards.  How much time is wasted if another team just wants to troll him and offer him a 1 year deal worth 6 million and he signs it just so he can reach free agency because he is pissed they are lowballing him.  THen they lose him for nothing.  See how much control they have then.
