Don’t Overpay Leon Draisaitl

from David Staples of the Edmonton Journal,
This in from TSN’s Ryan Rishaug, talking to Jason Gregor of TSN1260 about Leon Draisaitl’s contract negotiations: “It doesn’t surprise me that Draisaitl’s camp is going to play some hardball here. How hard a ball, I’m not sure. I suggested the ask was going to be north of $9 million. (TSN’s Darren) Dreger speculated it could potentially be double digits ,up round $10 million. A $10 million or $9.5 million ask for Leon Draisaitl on an eight year extension is big, big, big money. And in my opinion it’s a bit of a reach by his camp. But that’s what you do when you play hard ball. You play hard ball.”
1. Leon Draisaitl is a strong player, valuable to the Edmonton Oilers and he should be well-paid. But he must not be over-paid. I don’t see Draisaitl’s ask for $9 or $10 million per as bit of a reach. I see it as a massive reach. Draisaitl is (reportedly) asking for an unprecedented amount of money for an NHL player at his level on a second contract.
2. For the Oilers to compete, every player on the team can be well paid, but no one can be massively overpaid.

Nope. I don’t give him too much credit for playing with Connor McDavid. (All below are 5 on 5 numbers)
CF% With McDavid: 53.85
CF% Without McDavid: 47.74
SF% with McDavid: 55.62
SF% without McDavid: 45.03
GF% With McDavid: 59.42
GF% Without McDavid: 44.19
SCF% With McDavid: 54.55
SCF% Without MCDavid: 47.25
Too much reliance on a generational player. See: anyone on a line with Crosby.

I fear greatly reading more thoroughly into this article. Staples looks at it through financial terms, but seems to WAY overvalue Draisatl - putting him in the realm of Doughty/Tarasenko?
I just skimmed it but…oof. I think my comment above says more (in an actual analysis of WHY he shouldn’t get paid his ask) than Staples does with the argument ‘he’s good but not as good as these guys!’

Maybe if people would grow a pair… someone would offer sheet him if it got to that point, which I doubt it will. But if it did. I’d overpay for him in Detroit.
