Done In Calgary

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,

The Brian Elliott era is over in Calgary.

So is the Calgary Flames season.

Those facts aren’t mutually exclusive.

Not only did Elliott play a significant role in the Flames loss for the second game in a row, the 32-year-old netminder’s whiff on a soft, weak-angled wrister by Patrick Eaves a mere 5:38 into Wednesday’s series-ending game also put an abrupt end to any chance the Flames can put any more faith in him.

Or money.

That point was hammered home seconds later when coach Glen Gulutzan replaced Elliott with Chad Johnson, leading to one of the longest skates to the bench in Elliott’s career.

Surely his last as a Flame.

Immediately plopping himself down at the end of the bench, a stunned Elliott left his mask and gloves on the rest of the period.

You couldn’t help but feel bad for him.

Eric Stephens of the OC Register,

The Ducks advanced without Cam Fowler playing in any of the four games and Sami Vatanen also not dressing for the last three, both big-minute defenders sidelined because of injuries. The final win for this round wasn’t pretty but then little of what the Ducks do is.

Very simply, the Ducks just managed to get things done any way possible. It has been that way since they started a 15-0-3 run – regular season and playoffs – with a March 12 win over Washington, the Presidents’ Trophy winner.

“We’re in the business of winning,” said Ducks coach Randy Carlyle, who celebrated his 61st birthday with the victory. “And when you win, sometimes it’s not always going to be an artistic event that you perform. There’s terms in sports of winning ugly. … All those clichés apply when you’re in playoffs.

“Who’s going to criticize a win? Maybe you guys would. Not from my side of the fence.”

The Ducks got it done because in the end, Calgary actually isn’t a very good team.

Lots of mismatched talent, and putting all their eggs in Elliot’s basket was a huge mistake that they should have learned from watching St. Louis.
