I don’t know how much stock to put into anything anymore.  I live in Southern California and listen to a sports talk station called XX 1090 out of San Diego.  One of their guys is named Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton and he’s been on the air literally for decades.  Every day at the start of his show he gives a complete run down of all sports news he knows about….

In today’s show when he got to the NHL he reported that “a large joint meeting between owners and the NHLPA will probably take place tomorrow.  And there are reports that around the NHL head coaches will begin contacting their players this evening who are currently in Europe and Russia to tell them to prepare to fly back to the USA in time for possible training camp openings this weekend.”

That sure sounds to me like a deal is imminent, but if you listen to Bettman, Daly, and the Fehrs it sounds like they aren’t even close.

What to believe…..

I agree Paul.

All signs were pointing to a deal imminent but the news out of these meetings today make it seem like nothing’s changed.  Somethning doesn’t seem to be adding up.  Come on guys don’t put us through this anymore.

30 years from now at Harvard, this lockout will be it’s own semester-long course about the necessity for labor negotiators to react to the circumstances that exist, rather than those they wish existed or even, in a perfect world, would rightly exist.

This will include a lecture on basic arithmetic that reiterates that $1.75 billion (league’s October offer) > $1.6 billion (league’s September offer) > $1.3 billion (League’s December offer) > $0 (pending mid January offer). The second half of the class will note that $1.75 billion > $1.6 billion > $1.3 billion (NHLPA’s december offer).

Even if the league does blink and “give” whatever it is Don Fehr thinks it will, it sure as Hell won’t be $450 million more than the union already said it would accept.

An additional lecture will emphasize that the difference between 7 year and 8 year contract lengths is not worth the $450 million given up to get the extra year, let alone the $1.3 billion that’s currently at risk over it.

A coworker in my building is close friends with an NHL third line fan favorite player. They grew up together. That player got a message from the PA and from his coach last week that training camps would likely start up by the 12th. Obviously, it was a false start. It could be that the info that broadcaster offered is 100% correct and still 100% incorrect at the same time. We can only hope.

*edit - my coworker got a text from his friend conveying this now third hand information. My coworker let me see the text as he was very excited about it. Still, it amounted to very little in retrospect.
