Don Cherry talks Babcock, again

To put it indelicately, Don Cherry is going ga-ga over Mike Babcock, and while he insists that Babcock is no messiah, Cherry spent 85% of this Coach's Corner praising Babcock, praising Babcock, and also praising Babcock as the best coach in the world and the coach who will bring Canadians and Ontario natives to "Canada's team":

Now that Babs is in Toronto making things better all Ontario NHL players are going to start flocking back to Toronto.

The guy is an egomaniac, and that’s probably part of what it takes to be the top of any profession, in some sense.

If I was one of the “uncoachables” I would take offense if Babcock grabbed all the media attention. Fans should be careful with building personality cult of Babcock. Players are fragile and CBA gives them almost unchallengeable power for eventual strike or other form of “work stoppage”.  If Babcock pushes too hard, players in Toronto may quickly loose their feeling of safe comfort zone and integrity.

Babcock is goin to make a safe environment in Toronto for players.

As long as you get out of the way, let Mike soak in the spotlight, then it will be a safe place for you to play.

Thank God he’s gone from Detroit.  Every single game it was just him soaking up the spotlight afterwards.  Never gave his players or the other team any credit.  It was always “me, me, me” for an entire decade.  Remember that time the media was talking to Johan Franzen and Babcock just shoved him out of the way to ask the media guys if they liked his new haircut?  Franzen fell down, hit his head and has never been the same since.  It was always the Mike Babcock show, co-starring the Detroit Red Wings.

And man, I can’t believe how close he came in his bid to get the city of Detroit to change its name to Mike Babcock and for the Red Wings to change their name to the Mike Babcocks, making them the Mike Babcock Mike Babcocks.  The city and the organization really dodged a bullet on that one.  How embarrassing would it be to have Mike Babcock leave to coach the Maple Leafs and then Mike Babcock Mike Babcocks would have to find someone other than Mike Babcock to coach the Mike Babcock Mike Babcocks?  Talk about living in a guy’s shadow.  Would Jeff Blashill prove to be as good a coach of the Mike Babcock Mike Babcocks as Mike Babcock was?  I just don’t know…

Well,  you and Grapes already say no, because he’s American, and the Great ‘Cock is Canadian…so Blashill already has one huge strike against him.

A well-thought, rational one, too.

With #1-454 being every comment you’re posted about Babcock and every time you somehow brought Obama into a hockey discussion.

Yes.

I love Babcock.

Which is supported by every time I’ve hoped that he wouldn’t re-sign.

You’re pathetic, and your xenophobia is incredibly sad and ugly.  It makes you sound as bad as Don Cherry.

Yep.  You can’t be a good lib if you don’t through out the accusation of some phobia or ism.  Maybe MSNBC can open a hockey blog for you. It’s great when threads go down this road….
