Does This Make Any Sense?

Someone please tell me why Detroit's bankruptcy was brought up in this statement?

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,

The Red Wings on Friday tweeted the first pictures of newcomer Daniel Alfredsson on the ice, wearing his bright red Winged Wheel sweater. Painful for most onlookers from Ottawa, and a few here in the Hub of Hockey. The Bruins made an aggressive attempt to land Alfie as an unrestricted free agent, but he opted for the Wings, just a matter of days before Motown went into bankruptcy.

It’s hard to say what he’s trying to get across, but it seems he may be insinuating had Alfie known Detroit was going to bankrupt, he would have easily chosen Boston instead.

That, of course, is nothing but ignorance on what bankruptcy is. It’s like he believes Alfie’s checks will bounce most months, or it will be hit-and-miss whenever he goes to a grocery store hoping to buy basic food staples to keep his family fed.

One thing I’ve noticed is when sports writers veer out of simply writing about hockey, and attempt to take on non-hockey issues, the results usually are not that pretty, and are best ignored.

Just plain lazy writing.  It’s the city of Detroit that’s bankrupt, not the busy suburbs surrounding the city.  But easier to lump them all in together.

And this has anything to do with a one-year contract between the Red Wings and Daniel Alfredsson how?

I really don’t know what to say after reading that.  I’d have to leave logic and common sense so far behind to come up with any idea of what he’s trying to insinuate.  No proofreaders or editors at the Boston Globe?  Just write something then post it yourself?  I don’t expect Pulitzer level writing from sports journalists, but a high school newspaper editor would have glanced at that thought train and said, no.  Just sad.

Using the same “logic” as this asshat, I would say that Alfie didn’t pick Boston because they had a bombing there once.

Basically that detroit doesn’t have to worry about finances despite having a city going bankrupt yet funding a new arena for them.  Meanwhile the Sens are having money troubles, and not getting any money from their municipality (at least not on par with the financing for a new arena).

The gratuitous Detroit comment is “sour grapes”.

He is jealous that the Wings got Alfie, so he takes a cheap shot.

The comment tells the reader a lot more about Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe than it does about Detroit or the Wings.

The guys has no class.

Also, “...here in the Hub of Hockey”? We’re in the same division now, bitches, and let me tell you, last year was a *rebuilding* year for the Winged Wheel.

Gee, why would a writer covering a team take a swipe at the home city of another team that just happens to be a division rival who will directly and immediately challenge their cities team for the primacy of said division?

The guys has no class.

Heh.  Yeah.  ‘Class’.  There’s a lot of that in sportswriting, to lament it’s lack.

Reminds me of a certain schlub that writes for a Chicago paper and his ever classy writing about how he loved feasting on wings.  And how fast he choked on those words and went silent until that sham of a series was over.  This one will learn, hopefully the hard way as Detroit teaches these cubs a thing or two.

Yes, don’t invest money into something that provides returns. That would be terrible. Even money set aside for projects like that.  Even worse idea.
