I know he’s not the most popular guy on these boards, but he would be a great addition to the Wings.  I think Nill said it himself, the Wings need some bigger bodies to navigate through the playoffs.

Great news!  He is the true power forward we really need.  Hopefully, TickTock can get him locked up on July 1st.

5 years ago, I guess.

I think this is as close as Doan is going to come to saying “I’m done with PHX” though, and that’s interesting.  Wonder what his priorities are?  Glamour of a much bigger market?  An ACTUAL chance to win a ring?  Several truckloads of money?

He strikes me as the type that wants to win more than anything.  But he also has that Brad Stuart I don’t want to leave my family in the West thing, so we’ll see.

Pass on Doan.  Detroit already has Cleary and Bert filling the ‘grizzled vets hanging on for one more’ role.  Doan doesn’t bring anything to the Wings that the guys they already have shouldn’t be providing.

Except that Doan’s point totals basically match both of theirs combined.

I agree on brining in Doan. He may not be the power forward he was when he was younger but he’s still very productive and can crash and bang. He would give us that Dallas Drake type of player with the grit and heart only he can be more productive

And Detroit needs ANOTHER bottom-six forward?  Cleary and Bertuzzi are both already under contract and Bertuzzi has a no-trade clause.

A “bottom 6” forward” who scored 110 pts the last two years?  Just because he can hit doesn’t make him the equivalent of Cleary/Bertuzzi

Doan had 50 points last year.  Bert had 38, Cleary had 33.  And both Bert and Cleary played substantially less minutes.  And Doan had way more PP time than Bert and Cleary combined.

Doan made 4.5 mil last year.  Bert made 1.9 and Cleary made 2.8.

So… no.  Not really.

Add in that Doan had the worst +/- on the team at forward, he’s 35 and clearly in decline, it’s unclear if he’d sign for a sub 2 mil deal, and any multi year deal he signed would qualify as a 35+ contract… and again, it’s a pass.

He’s probably an upgrade on Cleary, but not much of one.

And Franzen scored 56 points.  Should I compare Franzen and Clerary?

But I will admit that Doan is my favorite player not on the Wings.  So there may be no reasoning with me :p

You’re the guy going nuts about Doan.  I’m merely pointing out that he is in no way as good of an idea as you seem to think he is.

His production comes from playing almost 20 minutes a night and loads of PP time.  Yes, he’d be playing with better offensive players in Detroit, but he’d also be playing much less.

If the idea is that Detroit could get Doan for a 2 year 5 mil deal, I’d consider it.

That kind of thing is not without significant risk, however… especially since Detroit may need every bit of that cap space to land bigger, more relevant players like a Parise, a Suter, a Weber, etc.

Also, there are roster considerations here.  Detroit has 12 guys under contract right now at forward, not including Abdelkader, who almost certainly will be shortly.

So you’re looking at having 13 guys already, which Doan would make 14, which Parise (maybe) would make 15.  You can waive Emmerton and nobody will shed a tear… but beyond that, who sits?  Eaves or Miller, major PKers?  Mursak, who hasn’t really had much of a chance to groove at all in Detroit yet?  Nyqvist?  Abby?

Then consider that you only play 12 so you’re waiving Emmerton and then scratching two of those guys in a ‘we signed Parise’ situation.

Enh.  Doan’s okay as a fallback, plan-b kind of thing if better options fall through, but only then and only if he’d sign for barely half of what he made last year and at a 2 year max term, to boot.

Doan has stupid-itis when it gets hot and heavy on the ice. A big “PASS” on this one. He wont help much already being a previous offender by being suspended down the stretch when you might need him.
