Doan Doing Everything He Can Do To Stay In Phoenix

from NHL.com,

Shane Doan reiterated Saturday that his preference is to re-sign with the Phoenix Coyotes.

“Right now I’m doing everything I can to stay there and that’s kind of my goal,” Doan said in an interview with TSN. “At the same time, I’m having to do some due diligence, now in the fact that the longer it takes the more likely and the harder it seems to be to get a deal done in Phoenix.”

Doan, who became an unrestricted free agent July 1, has put off signing with the Coyotes while the team’s future ownership is determined.

Doan reportedly has visited with the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks. Nashville Predators general manager David Poile said this week his team also has interest in the forward but would not require a visit.

“Right now I’m doing everything I can to stay there and that’s kind of my goal,” Doan said.

Super. Then quit playing the prima donna and sign a contract with the Losers In The Desert. You’ll make just as much money there as anywhere else and, best of all, you’ll have the latter part of April plus May and June off.

So quit being a giant douche bag and sign the damn contract already. Then the rest of the league can get on with the business of signing players who really want to win a Cup.

Man, with every passing day, I hate this guy more and more.

Doan may as well have just gone on national TV and said “I don’t care about winning”.  That’s basically what he has told teams now.

If his goal was to get other teams to lose interest in him, boy he sure is good at it.

But yes, what a complete jackwagon Doan has shown himself to be.  He deserves the Mange, and they deserve him.

I don’t understand why people here are taking it so personally. Too much time and not enough things to do? It has been common knowledge all along that he wants to stay in Phoenix. Teams made their pitch in the hope they would be his first option in case he can’t get a deal done in Phoenix. It’s business, no reason to get upset over something that doesn’t even qualify as news. Nothing has happened. Get a new hobby or something and stop obsessing over what is not happening in the world of hockey.

I understand the desire for hockey news with how slow things have been, but I don’t understand the hate toward Doan.  You can blame his agent for stirring up shite, but Doan himself has been incredibly consistent.  He doesn’t want to uproot his family.  He owns a ranch there.  He’s loyal to his teammates and the franchise.  And at 35-36 he wants to know where he is finishing his career.  If ownership was not an issue he would have signed back in March.  Blame Glendale/Bettman for the joke of the Phoenix drama.  Not Doan. He’s sacrificing quite a bit to do right by his immediate family vs personal glory.  And you call him a douchebag.  Odd.

He doesn’t want to re-sign if he’s not going to play in Phoenix… say, next year. Or the year after.

Honestly, this whole ordeal about the ownership can be summed up like this: Shiat or get off the pot. Stop screwing around already. If the team is gonna stay in the desert, fine. If the prospective owner doesn’t have the financial wherewithal to sustain the team in the desert, then you’ll just have to cut your losses and move the damn thing someplace where an owner can sustain it.

The only thing more frustrating than the Doan story is the Phoenix story.

I agree ... Doan is being a douchebag.

He can take 1 year out of his precious life, sign with another team, take a shot at a cup, and when the situation changes in Phoenix he can go back.

But nooooooooooooo ... he’s gotta hold up the whole league, put dozens of other UFAs careers on hold while he sits and waits for an ownership decision.

Draw the line douchebag ... when is enough enough ??

Shit or get off the pot Doan ... its only ONE YEAR.

geeeez ... like he’s signing away the rest of his freakin’ life or something.

What a stupid argument. Weren’t Parise and Suter holding the market (even if more players signed before their signing than after it), and Semin after them? And when Doan signs, are all the GMs wait a month for Colaiacovo or something?

And we (ie: most of us) always bang on players that are not loyal and stuff like that, then you go and rip on the player who’s showing loyalty to the end?

yanno ... on one hand you guys are right for ripping on me about criticizing Doan holding up the UFA process and me not caring about team loyalty atc. but, at the same time I could rip on you guys for not looking at it from a career/business perspective.

All players have a relatively small window of opportunity to maximize the amount of money they make over their brief career, and the opportunity to win a Stanley Cup is even smaller.  Sometimes you have to take a step back and look at the big picture.  Sometimes you have to think for yourself and do whats right for you and not the rest of your family or the fans or some team name.

Phoenix is owned by the NHL so who is he being loyal to ??  Every time the Red Wings go to Phoenix its like a home game for them so don’t say ‘the fans’ cuz Phoenix doesn’t have many.  If some 90 year old fart owned the Yotes and he’d been the franchise owner for 40 years then I might understand Doan’s actions, but in the teams current situation, I’m having a hard time grasping onto what he’s being loyal to.

If he’s worried about spending time away from his family and ranch then I’m just going to have to say ‘grow a pair’.

God willing, he lives to be 87 like Ted Lindsay, which makes 1 year a little farther away from his family look like a brief stroll through the park.  If he can sign a 1 year deal with a team that has a shot at winning the Cup, wheres the harm in that ??

Is anyone bad mouthing Ray Bourque for doing that ??

Have you seen me say one bad thing about the ‘disloyalty’ of Sergei Fedorov ??

Call me a selfish person if you want but, sometimes you have to look at things differently ... sometimes you have to do whats right for yourself and your career.

Will winning the Cup help him get into the Hall of Fame when his career is over ??  That would be a good question for Dave Andreychuk to answer.

Personally, I’m tired of fans whining about team loyalty.  If Shane Doan is your favorite play then fine, whine away, but if he’s not then try to look at hockey from a business perspective and understand what he has to do to better his career.

sometimes you have to do whats right for yourself

what he has to do to better his career

Maybe Doan thinks the best for Doan is to be with Doan’s family, playing on the team that Doan is playing for the entirety of Doan’s career. Maybe Doan is being loyal to Doan.

What I’m saying is, it’s his choice, and he shouldn’t be attacked because of his process.

Sometimes you have to think for yourself and do whats right for you and not the rest of your family

Damn, are you married?

But nooooooooooooo ... he’s gotta hold up the whole league, put dozens of other UFAs careers on hold while he sits and waits for an ownership decision.

So you basically want him to leave his family for a year so Pavel Kubina signs with someone. Okey dokey.

I find it humorous so many here are butt hurt about Doan not loving their favorite franchise. How on earth could he be loyal Phoenix and the Coyotes? Doesn’t he understand they are a loser franchise, in a loser city with loser fans? So what does that say about the other franchises he is dissing?  If the Coyotes are dogsh!t, that means these other teams are worse. How dare he deny us!!

I say kudos to Shane, loyalty is a dying value. Look at the whiners here trashing him for doing what is right for his family, city and franchise!

you’ll have the latter part of April plus May and June off.

Posted by OlderThanChelios on 08/05/12 at 01:17 AM ET

That’s funny, he was playing longer into the summer than your favorite team!
