Do You Want To See The NHL Expand To European Cities?

from Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic,

During an appearance on TSN 1050’s Leafs Lunch with Dave Feschuk and host Andi Petrillo, I asked Daly about the potential of having an NHL division in Europe one day. It was a question that had been raised by European media to both Daly and Gary Bettman during the recent Jets-Panthers games in Finland.

“Do I see it happening some day? Yes. Do I see it happening in the short term? Probably not,’’ Daly said. “There’s a lot of factors associated with that. I don’t think you can expand by just one or two teams in Europe. I think you have to have some medium number of teams that can play each other and make travel and schedule far more efficient than it would be with one or two teams.

“The number of our players who are born and trained in Europe and add to the talent level of the National Hockey League, the interest in the sport, in a number of countries in Europe, make it almost inevitable that at some point the National Hockey League will have teams in Europe.’’

Hold on, did he just say “inevitable?’’

Yes, let’s water down the talent pool even more.

Can you imagine being one of the west coast teams and having to fly to Prague, Berlin, Vienna, etc to play? What’s that flight from Anaheim, 12 hours?

As part of the “proper” league, no.

But an “NHL Europe” would be cool, maybe with the winner of that league playing a one-game or short series against the winners of the Stanley Cup.

The Wings finally have games at a more normal time after moving from the west and now they want to do Europe. Their greed will ruin the league.

No, competition with the KHL makes it inevitable.

I honestly wouldn’t mind seeing it. I would enjoy making a European trip and including some high quality hockey in the itinerary.

But it would take enough teams to create at least a European division. Teams can’t be flying over there for just a single game. West coast teams could be accommodated by making sure they have an extra day off before and/or after. Considering these guys travel first class, a long trip isn’t that big a deal.
