Discussing expansion draft-eligible players

From ESPN's Tal Pinchevsky:

George McPhee hasn't been on the job long enough to hire a scouting staff. But the general manager for the NHL's Las Vegas expansion franchise is already formulating his strategy for next year's expansion draft.

"Teams will still do their best to not give us anything," McPhee said. "We'll have a better opportunity to build a foundation than in previous expansion drafts. But we're going to have to work hard to find great players."

McPhee figures he will be lucky if he selects one or two players who stick with the franchise for the long term. But that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be staying away from players with long-term deals.

"I think we'll have to evaluate every team on a case-by-case basis and see what they have," McPhee said. "I'll take a longer contract if it's a good player."

Before McPhee got the job, the other 30 general managers were already shuffling their rosters so as to have options entering the expansion draft. With teams allowed to protect one goaltender, that's the main reason Frederik Andersen and Brian Elliott were dealt this summer and why the Pittsburgh Penguins, Tampa Bay Lightning and Detroit Red Wings are expected to make similar moves with goalies.

Teams will be able to protect seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie OR eight skaters and one goalie in the expansion draft. They must also protect players with no-movement clauses as well as first- or second-year pros.

I wonder how whether the Wings making the post-season next year affects their protected roster, especially with regards to their captain.

I could see Holland, given his overenthusiastic sense of loyalty, protecting Zetterberg were the Wings to make it 26 consecutive seasons in the playoffs.  And considering that Vegas is going to have plenty of netminding options (but probably very few “drop in” captain solutions), I could see them picking Hank up for the last few years of his career.

Interesting (and frightening) thoughts on a Thursday…

Kenny is too much about loyalty. He’ll protect Hank. he’ll protect Cleary. Helm, Howie, etc.

Kidding. Mostly. He will protect Hank though. Probably Helm.

The article mentions having to protect 1st and 2nd year pros. I thought it was 1st and 2nd year were exempt.

Confused also on that statement??

As for protecting Z for the last few years of his career, I don’t think he has more than one year, Kronner also.

Zetterberg will be protected, because he’s the captain and because if Holland keeps him around and he gets hurt or whatever, he may do the LTIR retirement or the benefit of the Wings, with regards to cap recapture and what have you.  If he gets exposed and claimed by Las Vegas then Zetterberg would have no reason to do anything to help out the Wings should he not be able to play anymore.

Oh, and he’s the captain.  Not sure if I mentioned that.  And keeping a guy like that -who has spent his entire career with the Wings, has won a Cup with them and is their captain- has nothing to do with being too loyal, it has to do with being exactly the right amount of loyal.

The Wings won’t have to protect Z as Vegas won’t take him anyway. The contract for Z is not the “Just the Right amount of Loyalty”  Stupid yes!

Z should know the end is near, physically worn out.

Garth are you KH’s son for today??  Yikes, HSJ’s son Friday, LOL

I have yet to see a prospective list of DRW protectees which includes Z.  Of course MSM != KH.

Yeah, you’re right.  It was very stupid to sign Zetterberg to that deal.  Ken Holland should’ve know that the rules regarding contracts would change.

Z should know the end is near, physically worn out.

Yeah, hopefully he knows himself as well as WingedRider knows him.

Garth are you KH’s son for today??

Why?  Because I think it would be dumb to leave a guy unprotected because he’s the captain and also because him retiring early as a Las Vegas Whatever would royally, completely and catastrophically F*CK the Wings?

I’ve yet to see a list that includes anything beyond blind speculation on the part of whoever put the list together.

I wonder if teams will be sharing, publicly or even internally, who is protected and who isn’t.

TreKronor, from what I understand, all 30 teams have to submit a list 48 hours after the conclusion of the last game of the Stanley Cup finals.  We may not know who’s on that list until that time.

What’s the penalty to the original team for an early-retiring player which was plucked from their roster during an expansion draft?

NHL.com has a nice write-up on the expansion draft rules.

draft pix / prospects are a teams life blood . wings draft bottom 10 twenty years leaving them very shallow on high level talent but are still subjected to the same rules as all other teams for expansion draft . a total bunch of malarky by idiots running nhl whom see nothing wrong with destroying succesful franchises as long as they can keep starting new teams / making more money . should be a scale in place that averages out teams draft position over say past 10 years and adjusts the nuimber of players that can be protected with lowest average draft position being able to protect more players than highest draft position

The cap recapture penalty goes to the team that signed the player to the original contract regardless of whether they retired a member of that team or not.

They dp NOT have to protect first and second year players. Thus, Larkin doesn’t have to be protected. Years in the AHL count so that’s why Mantha and AA have to be protected as far as I know.

My protect list would be:

Abdelkader
AA (RFA 2017)
Nyquist
Tatar (RFA in 2017)
Nielson
Sheahan
Mantha

DeKeyser
Marchenko

Mrazek

That really doesn’t leave room to protect Zetteberg. It also exposes Helm and Glendening who they just made big commitments to.

There really isn’t room for sentimentality when creating this list. I really wouldn’t mind if they dangled Helm to keep Z but exposing any of those others would be a mistake. I sure don’t want to see them expose Marchenko over Kronwall at this moment.

Things can certainly change over this season. I’m sure we’ll see a lot of moves leading up to the expansion draft.

My mistake, I already had Helm exposed. To keep Z they have to expose one of Tatar, Nyquist or Sheahan. I hate that possibility. This is about the future, not the past.

I guess my hope is that Holland sits down with Z and Kronwall and explains the situation. The chance that either would be claimed seems kind of slim especially when a team could claim Helm or Glendening first allowing the Wings to protect another player (Z).
