Disaster Averted

from Michael Traikos of the National Post,

On behalf of the entire hockey world: Phew!

Crisis averted. A bullet — if not a ping-pong ball — has been dodged.

The New York Rangers have won the NHL draft lottery. And while it’s still a bit unusual that a team that was competing in the post-season just a few days ago has now won the No. 1 overall pick, at least Alexis Lafreniere is not going to Pittsburgh, Edmonton or Toronto.

Now that would have been embarrassing. That would have gone against the so-called “spirit of the draft.”

That was always the fear when the NHL went to Part 2 of a convoluted draft lottery system after a “placeholder” somewhat unexpectedly won Part 1 of the lottery back in June. That meant that the eight teams that lost in the Stanley Cup qualifiers — Edmonton, Florida, Minnesota, Nashville, NY Rangers, Pittsburgh, Toronto and Winnipeg — all had an equal 12.5% chance of winning the No. 1 overall pick.

Disaster averted? Try disaster minimized, maybe.

Agreed, it was minimized. The whole process was a joke.

disagree—it was still a disaster…

The New York Rangers finished with 79 pts for 18th overall in the league. They have a Hart trophy finalist.
In 2017 Rangers were not a participant
In 2018 went from 9th to 9th
In 2019 went from 6th to 2nd
In 2020 went from 18th to 1st
That’s a total of 21 spots gained over the past 4 years.

The Wings finished with 39 pts. Ottawa was 2nd worst with 63 pts. Let that sink in.
in 2017 Wings went 7th to 9th.
in 2018 Wings went 5th to 6th.
In 2019 Wings went 4th to 6th.
In 2020 Wings went 1st to 4th.
total of of 8 spots lost in past 4 years.

The NHL draft weighting is designed to to guard against teams purposely losing regular season games to improve their draft position,

HOWEVER, the entry draft is designed to make sure no one team can sign contracts with all the best young players in the league similar to a team winning a bidding war for all the talent if there was no draft.

This point seems to keep getting lost with multiple years of Oilers picking 1st.

Add in the Oilers ,Penguins, and Maple Leafs and the whole purpose of having an entry draft was blown.

Don’t let Buttman’s spin convolute this point.

Clearly, something needs to change. The Wings are not going to be able to acquire a franchise player through the draft. They’re going to have to use the cap to take talent from other teams and build a team similar to Boston’s or St. Louis current teams which weren’t done with drafting in the top 3.
