OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators (@Senators) announced today that the club has acquired defenceman Dion Phaneuf, forward Matt Frattin, forward Casey Bailey, forward Ryan Rupert and defence prospect Cody Donaghey from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenceman Jared Cowen, forwards Colin Greening, Milan Michalek and Tobias Lindberg as well as Ottawa’s second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. No salary will be retained by either team over the trade’s entirety.

Phaneuf, 30, has recorded 24 points (three goals, 21 assists), while registering 67 penalty minutes in 51 games for Toronto this season. The three-time National Hockey League all-star has scored 120 goals and added 304 assists in 801 career games between the Calgary Flames and Toronto.

The 6-3, 227-pound defenceman was Calgary’s first pick (ninth overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He was traded to Toronto on 1/31/10 with Fredrik Sjostrom and Keith Aulie in exchange for Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and Ian White

Phaneuf has been a finalist for the Norris trophy (2007-08), a member of the NHL All-Rookie Team (2006), an NHL First All-Star Team member (2008) and has played in three NHL All-Star Games (2007, 2008 and 2012).

Rupert, 21, has six goals and 12 points in 29 AHL games with Toronto this season. Donaghey, 19, was signed by the Maple Leafs as an undrafted free agent and has scored five goals and registered 22 points in 36 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League games with the Halifax Mooseheads and Moncton Wildcats this season.

Greening, 29, scored 38 goals and registered 87 points over 256 NHL games (all with Ottawa) including one this season. Cowen, 25, has earned four assists in 37 games this season and has recorded 15 goals and 46 points in 249 career games with the Senators. Michalek, 31, has scored six goals and registered 10 points this season. In 729 career games with Ottawa and the San Jose Sharks, he has scored 206 goals and added 232 assists for 438 points. Lindberg, 20, was Ottawa’s fourth-round selection (102nd overall) in the 2013 NHL Draft. He has recorded 22 points (five goals, 17 assists) over 34 games in his rookie season with the Binghamton Senators.

Toronto release...

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the team has acquired forwards Milan Michalek, Colin Greening and Tobias Lindberg, defenceman Jared Cowen, and a 2017 second-round draft pick from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for defencemen Dion Phaneuf and Cody Donaghey, as well as forwards Casey Bailey, Matt Frattin and Ryan Rupert.

Michalek, 31, has registered six goals and four assists in 32 games with the Senators this season. In 729 career NHL games between Ottawa and the San Jose Sharks, he has recorded 438 points (206 goals and 232 assists) and 386 penalty minutes. He has also collected 24 points (15 goals and nine assists) in 63 career playoff games. Michalek was originally selected by the Sharks with the sixth overall selection in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He was acquired by Ottawa along with Jonathan Cheechoo and a second-round pick in 2010 from San Jose in exchange for Dany Heatley and a fifth-round pick in 2010 on September 12, 2009.

Greening, 29, has split his season between Ottawa and its American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Binghamton Senators. The St. John’s, Newfoundland native has skated in one game with Ottawa and another 41 games with Binghamton, collecting seven goals and six assists with the AHL club. In 256 career NHL games, Greening has recorded 87 points (38 goals and 49 assists) and 137 penalty minutes. He has also recorded five points (three goals, two assists) in 17 career NHL playoff games. Cowen, 25, has collected four assists in 37 games with the Senators this season. In 249 career NHL games, the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native has recorded 46 points (15 goals and 31 assists) and 174 penalty minutes. He has skated in 17 career playoff games, recording four assists. Cowen was originally selected by the Senators with the ninth overall selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

I don’t know, but I don’t think a trade for a guy with four more years on his contract is a trade for today specifically.

I think this is more of a money move overall. The Sens dump a few guys they didn’t need/want (Michalek has been replaced by guys like Stone, Hoffman, Lazar. Cowan has been on the block for quite a while) and get a solid middle-pairing defenseman who can eat up minutes behind Karlsson.

Toronto gets Ottawa’s cast offs, at the benefit of them only having 1 additional season on the books. Michalek makes $4 against the cap, and Cowan makes $3.1, but both contracts expire after next season. Work better for the rebuild than Phaneuf’s deal lasting forever.

Great deal for the Leafs, not entirely sure on the motivation by the Sens. Not a bad deal necessarily, but kind of a head scratcher.

They rarely do, but when 1 of the teams is in full rebuild mode it doesn’t matter as much.

Frank Seravalli tweet,

So many layers to deal. Cap hits worked, but #Leafs traded $33M in future contract commitments in exchange for $11.7M in commitments. Huge.

Well, if the Leafs are as unimportant and pathetic as you like to project them to be, then doesn’t their ability to unload their shit contracts (which, by the way, are much worse than some of Detroit’s shit contracts) make it even worse that the best GM in the NHL can’t deal away his?

OK, to be fair, he tried to unload Kindl, which is a far cry from Phaneuf.

You’re right, Kindl’s contract is about five million less per year, four years shorter and doesn’t have any kind of no-trade attached to it…

I’m sure you encounter a lot of Leafs fans in your day-to-day life in the UP (I know from my visits to Michigan that most Yoopers are Leafs fans), but you’re not going to convince someone who lives in Toronto that what you think is what most fans think.

Just don’t pretend it’s nothing.

So many Leafs fans in the Soo.  Growing up there, they were the only team shown regularly on HNIC.  That’s when my hatred of the Leafs started.  Now, however, I’m surrounded by Sens fans.  Not a whole lot better.

As a Red Wing fan growing up in the Soo yes, there were a lot of Leafs fans, but there were also a lot of Canadiens fans.  And a lot of Oilers fans.  And a smattering of Wings fans.

And do you think there are more Leafs fans in the Soo or in Toronto?

I’d really like to know your answer to that.

Leafs finally came to their senses and traded this bozo. Ottawa likes tough players.
Dion can pile up PIMs and turnover the puck at the worst times all he wants in Ottawa as long as he fights and scores the occasional goal. Now all Ken Holland has to do is trade Ericsson to Ottawa for a 7th round pick and Neil cool grin  Those two turnover machines with Karlsson who plays defense as a hobby would be fun to watch, hehe.
