Did You Expect Anything Different From The GM Meetings?

added 3:27pm, from Stephen Whyno of the CP at the Globe and Mail,

After one day of the NHL’s general managers meeting, it appears as though any rule changes coming will be subtle.

The league’s 30 GMs met in three separate groups of 10 Monday morning at Boca Beach Club to discuss a variety of topics, including changing overtime to reduce shootouts, expanding video-review criteria and looking at goaltender interference.

Well, that was, uh, productive.

I don’t much care what they do with OT.  I just wish they’d crapcan the shootout.  I hate the shoolout, and I don’t mind a hard fought tie.

They should do away with 3 point games. It’s a 2 point system, that sometimes is a 3 point system. Either allow for ties where each team gets 1 point and no points for an OT loss. Or if they don’t want ties, then switch to a 3 point system, where a regulation time winner gets 3 points, in OT it’s 2 and 1

I expected something different.  Way more golfing and even less talking about hockey than previous meetings.

So of course they do not address the real issue which is that goalies are bigger than the nets.  It’s time to confront evolution and make the nets bigger which would settle more games before going to a shootout.  While the game is better and faster scoring is no better than the Dead Puck era.  The one thing that would actually make a difference is a bigger net so of course it won’t happen.

There’s also the whole “teams block more shots than they ever used to” thing that everyone kinda’ always forgets about.  I’d start there first.  Let more shots get through first, and see what happens…

Yes why would the 4th most popular sport want their stars having more ice time.
