Rolston is an upgrade over Hunter, and Jersey needed to shed salary, since Rolston will make $5 million and Hunter $2 million.  But Hunter has another year on the books and Ralston is in the final year of his contract.  It’s a minor move that helps both teams.
The Islanders may think that Nino isn’t ready to make the team.

Islanders are more likely looking for Rolston’s shot from the point on the PP which they sorely lacked once the “Wiz” took his show to Montreal. Hunter was a good foot soldier, but hadn’t played the better part of last season so it is just a salary dump by the Devils. The Devils apparently also got a pick, but not sure of the details.

Rolston’s shot. This is a financial move, nothing else. Jersey was up against the cap with Parise still to be signed, NY was way below the floor and had no easy way of getting there without a trade like this. Beats trading for Redden, I guess.

Rolston’s shot.

Should clarify. Rolston is like an old shot fighter who used to be a contender. There’s still some power in the right hook, but that’s about all he’s got.

Rolston certainly had a better finish than Hunter after a terrible start. This is certainly moving of cap space more than anything, but both players if healhty could still surprise.

PS
Apparently no pick involved as previously mentioned.

Rolston can finish in very specific circumstances (hence the metaphor), he just can’t do anything else adequately at this point in his career (though neither can Hunter). It’s a paper and financial move; neither team is going to win one more or one less game because of this trade (ignoring that Jersey needs to use the $ elsewhere.

Terrible move by a terrible org (Isles).

If you know nothing else out of this trade, just know that Rolston is (from what I saw of him last year) probably in his last year before retirement.  He’s not going to bring anything to the table…

He brings them $3M+ closer to the cap floor.
