Over the last few days, the talking mouths have been asking, why isn't Detroit interested in the Stanley Cup Finals? They go on to blame OLN and Bettman for the lack of coverage, etc. But I know for a fact, 99% of southeastern Michigan has access to OLN.
The real problem and this even was an issue during the regular season, is these guys don't have the hockey knowledge to present the facts to the fans and they only talk about topics that they consider "hot".
My solution to this problem, get some hockey experts on the radio. Kevin Allen appears 2x a week and is always taking questions from fans, other than that, Scotty Bowman was on during the season, but no questions were allowed for Scotty. Also, Mickey Redmond appears on a FM station, and he too is bombarded with questions from hockey fans.
The problem is they don't talk enough about it, never will, because the simple fact is they don't know enough about the game. Fans know that, and can only shake their heads when hearing some of the stuff that comes out of the talk radio guys.
A perfect example just happened on WXYT. Art Regner was asked what is going on with Steve Yzerman. Art's response, " I haven't talked to him in a couple of weeks, I don't know what his plans are". Thanks for that update Art.
update 4:16pm, Peter Karmanos called in and stated the league is going to make record revenue, in part due to the value of the Canadian dollar lately. He said OLN is going above and beyond what the league expected. It was not like they had a choice, ESPN did not want the NHL. Plus ESPN only promotes what ESPN wants to promote. NBC has promises the NHL will be at the top of the sporting world on their station, so they are very happy with the TV relationship.
He was asked about winning the SC by default due to the injury to Roloson. He said that a team never wins like that, you have to make sure you have good backup players. He pointed out Cole is out but you don't hear them complaining about that.
He mentioned he would be a very proud person if the Canes were able to hold the cup. They started out on the bottom, so it would be very rewarding.
Karmanos did state it has been a quite year for Detroit hockey this year, due to the Pistons success. He sees hockey taking over again next year, with the cap going up, Wings will get back into the swing of things.
He also mentioned the NHL will continue to tweak the rules. Talked about the puck over the glass rule, then he brought up the fact that the Canes were called for a "new rule" hooking penalty two minutes after the call on Buffalo, but Karmanos said Buffalo "declined" to score on that power play.
Talked about Goodenow, said he was hellbent on destroying the league. The NHL had to step up to do something to change what was going on. He claims the NHL offered the same deal they signed to Goodenow four years ago and he refused to look at it. Goodenow kept on claiming the teams were hiding money.
Well, Karmanos speaks his mind today, nothing held back!!!
