Detroit Signs Ruslan Salei

via numerous Twitter reports,

Wings sign defenseman Ruslan Salei to a one-year contract.

added 1:00pm,

DETROIT—The Red Wings announced that they signed defenseman Ruslan Salei to a one-year contract. In accordance with team policy, additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Salei, 35, was originally a first round draft pick (ninth overall) of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in 1996.

The Minsk, Belarus, native has appeared in 842 career games with the Ducks, Florida Panthers and Colorado Avalanche. He has 194 points, including 43 goals and 1,017 penalty minutes over 13 NHL seasons.

A back injury limited Salei to just 14 games for Colorado in 2009-10. He finished the season with a goal and five assists.

Hmm. Thought he (like most everyone else) would be too expensive. Interesting. Considering the injury situation from last season, similar ages, styles, and career numbers, this is basically the same as signing Mitchell, just less “sexy” to the North American press…

Only thing I don’t like about it is that since he is 35, if he’s a bust, that’s it, you’re officially stuck with Ericsson/Kindl as your bottom pairing come hell or high water.

The Genius said he was ready to start the season like that if they didn’t find what they were looking for and still felt confident going into next season.  If he’s a bust, it leaves Kindle, Janik and Smith to step up.  I like it, all the way around, worst case scenerio, it still looks good.

Looking at a few YouTube clips, he is on par with Lilja as a fighter.

That’s regrettable Paul.  He’s signed for 750 though… half the price as lilja…

That’s even worse, this fight is with Ott and it’s two years ago.  I’d rather have Janik droppin’ the gloves than Salei… he’ll be hardnosed but he wont be able to drop the mits, at least not successfully.

I don’t think we brought Salei in to fight.  We didn’t really have Lilja to fight either, he was just the guy who did it sometimes.

He’ll bring a good solid presence to the third pairing.

Can’t tell if you were half-kidding Paul… but it’s really irrelevant whether or not he can fight. Abdelkader, Bertuzzi, and Ericsson aren’t really “fighters” either, but did a good job “keeping the flies off.” And certainly the hitting of Kronwall and Stuart helps, too.

There’s never anything more overrated by Wings fans than “physicality” and fighting. I guess there’s still a generation that’s intoxicated with the excitement Probert and Kocur brought to the team. But let’s not forget that this team has been far more successful since the Bruise Brothers era ended…

By no means am I saying he was signed for being a fighter or is one, just hate seeing him getting beat up in just about every video.

Awesome.

So we get a Lilja with even less puck skills and more brain farts in his own zone.

I’m going to hate this season.

Keith Magnuson never won a fight, and never turned one down….
He could play on my team anytime.

Wonder how motivated Modano is now?

It’s not just that he sucks, he gets his ass whooped.  Hard to keep the flies off if you’re pullin’ a turtle everytime you drop the mits.  You actually have to be intimidating to keep flies off.  THATS why Bert is useful, he wont do it, but no one wants to find out where his line on the ice is on it.

So as far as physical presence, yes, he’ll probably get himself out of position chasing people around in his own zone, but as far as the 6th d man to keep the flies off of our stars, he’s not it.  Janik would be more intimidating to openents than Salei.  Granted this is all just my take on things.  For what he lacks in fighting prowess (which will suck when he gets whooped and the other team gets momentum off of it) he makes up for in pnt. production.  He’ll definately be more offensively viable than Lils even though we aren’t really counting on any offense from him.  He is a good assist man for a 3rd pairing though, maybe he’ll open up Ericssons offensive skills… TBD
