Destinations For Niemi

from Dave Lozo of NHL.com,

A 26-year-old goaltender with a Stanley Cup ring has to find work somewhere, right? Most teams seem pretty set in their goaltending situations as of today, but there are a few places where Niemi could make a good fit.

Washington Capitals
Goaltenders signed
: Semyon Varlamov, Michal Neuvirth
The Capitals are on the record as saying they are content to go with their young goaltenders this season. But that was before Niemi became available.

From that list, San Jose and Washington makes the most sense. And they have the necessary cap room to accommodate someone like Niemi.

I think the author is quite misguided.  Only Washington and San Jose are plausible and perhaps Montreal.  Dallas and Atlanta are definitely not interested.  And I doubt Holmgren is either.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Colorado or the Islanders try to give him a 4 year 10-12 million dollar deal to lock up netminding at a reasonable price now for next season when both clubs have litte to nothing.  May want to add Tampa to that list.

As I’ll point out for the hundredth time, the Caps whole cap has been put together under the assumption that they will have cheap goaltending for the next 2 to 3 years. That’s why they are able to sign Backstrom,Ovechkin,Semin,Green and Fehr to the deals they did without gutting the rest of the team. They will not change their plan to fit Niemi and his 3 mil asking price onto their roster. That’s why they have done virtually nothing this off-season. They expect their improvements to come from their young players (Varlamov,Alzner,Carlson,Johannson,Pearreult, etc)
