Deep Digging On the Clock Issue

from Mike Sielski of the Wall Street Journal,

To watch the closing seconds of the Los Angeles Kings’ 3-2 win last month over the Columbus Blue Jackets is to see a thrilling sequence of hockey. At the last possible moment, with the score tied, Kings defenseman Drew Doughty snaps the puck past Columbus goaltender Curtis Sanford. The goal wins the game. The crowd thunders.

Most regular-season sports highlights are quickly forgotten, no matter how exciting they may be. But the tape of this Feb. 1 incident has become a platform for conspiracy theories. It has prompted the NHL to implement new rules and could become a major source of embarrassment for the league during the playoffs.

Leave it to the WSJ to overhype this by calling it the NHL’s Zapruder film. The video of the last few seconds of a NHL regular season game showing a clock “malfunction” is the same as a video of a presidential assassination? Really?

Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to call it the NHL’s Michigan State Moment (remember MSU v Kanasas, NCAA tourney, game in KC, clock “malfunction”)?

The metaphor hyperbole that is so common in the media devalues the significance of the historical event to which the modern event is compared.

Another example is from the Magic Johnson doc on ESPN, “The Announcement,” where one of the interviewees compared it to, again, the JFK assassination. Magic is great and all, but he’s just a basketball player and he’s no JFK. A more appropriate metaphor would be the Miracle on Ice as a touchstone moment where every one remembers where they were when they heard the USA beat Russia. (Red Lobster in Ann Arbor. Everyone stood and cheered when they announced the score. Then we all rushed home to watch the game because it was tape delayed.)

I got stupid looks from people in Brendan’s Pub in the Orleans Casino, CaptD.  They asked me why I was laughing.  I said it was the dumbest, most obscene comparo ever.  I quit watching after they mentioned the JFK assassination.

But, yeah, don’t let a little thing like hyperbole and incongruousness get in the way of a sobfest of a biopic.

ESPN eternally sucks.

I actually thought it was very well done except for that one really stupid comment.
