David Poile Talks Team USA And Bobby Ryan

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

Team USA says its sorry to Bobby Ryan.

Speaking on a conference call with reporters Friday morning, United States GM David Poile issued a public apology to the Senators’ winger for comments by Calgary president Brian Burke about his intensity.

Asked by the Ottawa Sun -- the only local news outlet on the call -- if he was upset the comments were made public, Poile didn’t mince his words.

“I’m trying right now, if I can, to apologize to Bobby Ryan,” said Poile. “If that was said about me or one of my players I would be very upset with this. I apologize as much as I can.

“I’m big on (growing the game). As far as anything to denegrate any player, that is not what any of us signed up for. None of us signed up for. This was just a little bit too much. For the umpteenth time I totally apologize to Bobby Ryan on behalf of our staff and Brian Burke, who was absolutely the biggest supporter of Bobby Ryan on our staff. Nowhere does that show that. It’s just unfortunate.”

Saying Burke was Ryan’s biggest supporter on the staff makes it sound much worse, actually, because what did the other guys say that made Burke appear to be a supporter at all?

A dumb apology from the wrong guy.

Again, should never have allowed a reporter inside the room while they’re discussing these players because inevitably they will end up with some really poorly worded criticisms.

Keep this story in mind whenever you get an “inside” look at anything in the NHL.  Whenever anything gets reported that wasn’t what the hockey people originally wanted reported, there is hand wringing about what went wrong.

What you read in the media is mostly bullshit and filler and the NHL’s talking points.

That’s why it was such a bad idea for them to allow a reporter access to the process. If it wasn’t Bobby Ryan, ti would’ve been another guy.

There is plenty of examples of people giving us an “inside view” without showing us anything of value.  HBO’s NHL 24/7 is the most obvious one.

I think the most enlightening thing this “inside look” (and I am uncertain how inside it was) is to show us how the team selection is has less meaningful insight than many would have imagined.  I could select the right friends and sit around and have at least as meaningful a selection conversation for an Olympic Team.

This wasn’t the NHL. Wonder how much control they require over the 24/7 show.
