from Elliott Teaford of the OC Register,
John Gibson stood his ground as Matt Duchene of the Ottawa Senators skated into the attacking zone in the closing minutes of the second period Thursday at Canadian Tire Centre. Suddenly, there was chaos all around the Ducks’ All-Star goaltender.
Duchene scored on a terrific individual effort, driving to the net to give the Senators a two-goal lead en route to a 4-0 victory over the hapless Ducks. Retreating Ducks defenseman Jaycob Megna accidentally leveled Gibson a nanosecond later, while trying to prevent Duchene from scoring.
Gibson remained in goal for the final 1:52 of the second period, but exited the game for precautionary reasons to start the third, yielding to backup Chad Johnson for his fourth consecutive start as the Ducks lost their sixth in a row and the 18th of their past 20 games.
The Ducks fired a season-high 45 shots at Ottawa goalie Anders Nilsson, but couldn’t put one past him despite some of the best pressure they’ve created in weeks. The Ducks were shut out for the second time during their losing streak and held to one goal or fewer for the 20th time this season.
“There are some dark clouds over this team right now,” right wing Corey Perry said. “We’ve got to find a way to get the sunshine back out and play with confidence and have fun again. Hockey is a fun sport to play, but you’ve got to find a way to dig yourself out of it.”
