while Shanahan explains himself clearly and the hit is obviously illegal, i don’t really get how this punishment can be deemed “consistent” seeing that he took into account there WAS an injury and Byers HAD been previously suspended. isn’t 3 games about what he’s been giving for first time offense headshots without injuries?? i’d have thought this was worth 5 or even a couple more based on other similar suspensions.

oh well, i still stand by the fact that in the long term, these videos will absolutely make for more consistent punishments. there wasn’t even ammo to argue inconsistency in the previously non-transparent disciplinary process. once you have a few years of these videos there will be clear documented precedence for just about every infraction in just about every situation. while i don’t agree with every punishment he’s handed out, creating the transparency he has created will, in the long term, change the disciplinary system in the NHL forever and that is a huge accomplishment by Shanahan
