The collapse was going to be spectacular. The New York Rangers, a laughingstock when they had $65 million to spend, had to suddenly get by on half that. The pinned their hopes on flighty and temperamental Jaromir Jagr, whose two-and-a-half year stretch in Washington turned the Capitals into a hapless bottom feeder. They loaded up on Europeans and still had Glen Sather, 14 years removed from his last winning season, as the primary architect.
