The collapse was going to be spectacular. The New York Rangers, a laughingstock when they had $65 million to spend, had to suddenly get by on half that. The pinned their hopes on flighty and temperamental Jaromir Jagr, whose two-and-a-half year stretch in Washington turned the Capitals into a hapless bottom feeder. They loaded up on Europeans and still had Glen Sather, 14 years removed from his last winning season, as the primary architect. We had the New York headlines all ready to go: Start Spreading The News, They're Heavin' Today.
