Coyotes Want To Keep Doan Around

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,

Phoenix Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said he wants to sit down and discuss a new contract with captain Shane Doan before training camp begins.

“I would like to start dialogue to see where he is at, and what he is thinking,” Maloney said. “He is certainly a guy we would like to re-sign, and I would rather do it now and not next June 30.”

Doan, 34, has played his entire career with the Coyotes organization, dating to when the team was still located in Winnipeg. He moved with the team to Phoenix in 1996-97.

“He lives and dies with the Coyotes as much anyone,” Maloney said. “He’s important to us.”

I used to like Doan until I saw him in the playoffs. He seemed to think “leading” meant skating around trying to hit everything with no thought about if it was a clean hit, a late hit, an effective hit or even the best hockey play to make for your team. I think he still hasn’t grasped what ‘playoff intensity’ really means.

Still, I’m sure the Coyotes would like to keep him as he is very popular in Phoenix. Well, as far as any hockey player could be in Phoenix, anyways.  I’m sure he’d like to stay in Phoenix too as he’s spent his entire career on this team - he’ll get his number retired and I bet he knows it.
