Consider The Florida Panthers Done After Their Loss To The Pittsburgh Penguins

from Harvey Fialkov of the SunSentinel,

“They [basically] have nine guys up from the AHL,” Panthers interim coach Tom Rowe said. “They played a very simple and effective game. We responded in spurts, but I thought we would’ve gone to the net a little more.”

For the first time this season, Rowe and his players were talking about playing for pride as they remain six points behind idle Toronto for the final wild-card playoff berth with 11 games remaining. They’d also have to leap over the New York Islanders and Tampa Bay.

“[Playing for pride is] the mentality we’re going to have to have the rest of the way,” Rowe added. “We’re not mathematically eliminated, but we’re in a hole for sure.”

The Panthers are done with little fault to either of their head coaches. The injuries were too much, they dug a hole that they were’t able to get out of, they came close and then just couldn’t to it. First they lost Huberdeau, Barkov, Petrovic, Bjugstad and then when it looked like they might turn it around they lost Ekblad & Luongo. It is over the fat lady has sung.

Vanek gave them 7 pts in 9 games.  But has been a -6.

In DET, Vanek was a +2, with 38 pts in 48 games.

He’s been producing pts. at the same clip, but there’s obviously been other problems there in Florida, because it’s not like Vanek had all kinds of awesome +/- guys around him in DET.

Vanek plays on the third line… Jakub Kindl is the replacement for Ekblad…
