The Edmonton Oilers have signed the National Hockey League’s 2016-17 Most Valuable Player and team captain Connor McDavid to an eight-year contract extension. McDavid’s new contract will commence in 2018-19, as he is currently in the final year of his entry level contract.

McDavid finished a career year capturing three NHL awards, earning the Art Ross Trophy as the League’s leading scorer, the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s Most Valuable Player and the Ted Lindsay Award as the NHL's most outstanding player in the regular season as judged by the members of the NHL Players Association. McDavid is the third youngest player in NHL history to capture the Art Ross Trophy and the Hart Trophy (behind only Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby). He was also named an NHL First Team All-Star for the first time in his career.

On October 5, 2016, McDavid became the youngest team captain in Oilers and NHL history, at 19 years and 266 days.

The 20-year-old Newmarket, Ontario native appeared in all 82 games with the Oilers last season, posting a league-leading 100 points (30G, 70A) and 26 penalty minutes. He led or co-led the NHL in scoring from November 22 through to the end of the season and also led the NHL in points per game (1.22). McDavid tied for the team lead in powerplay points (27) as well as game-winning goals (6) and led Oilers forwards in time on ice, averaging 21:07 per game, ranking him fourth among forwards in the NHL. He also recorded nine points (5G, 4A) in 13 playoff games.

The 6’1”, 200-pound centre has appeared in 127 career NHL games, accumulating 148 points (46G, 102A) and 44 penalty minutes. He has also played in 13 playoff games, posting nine points (5G, 4A) and two penalty minutes.

McDavid has represented Canada four times internationally, most recently at the 2016 World Hockey Championship, registering nine points (1G, 8A) in 10 games, helping Canada capture a gold medal. He also represented Canada at the 2015 World Junior Hockey Championship, the 2014 World Junior Hockey Championship and the 2013 U18 World Hockey Championship. In addition, he captained Team North America at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

McDavid was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round, 1st overall in the 2015 NHL Draft.
