Complaining Won’t Help

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

Even before ‘Colie-mail’ arrived in our collective in-box this week, there has been outrage.

Fans have been calling for NHL VP and league disciplinarian Colin Campbell’s head for weeks, months and, in some cases, years.

The same goes for the media, who have written thousands upon thousands of words expressing shock, dismay and ridicule for how the NHL conducts its disciplinary business.

We have seen and heard it all concerning both Campbell and the dispensing of justice, NHL style. Resign in shame. Overhaul the system and institute a tribunal. Do I hear a call for a 10-game suspension? Lifetime ban, anyone?

The cacophony was deafening.

Everywhere except within the NHL community.

They, the NHL, the “good old boy network” continue down the same path - oblivious towards the attitudes of the fans.

The very same fans that are entirely responsible for their livelihoods.  Seems a very inept way to run a business.

That’s just the way it is.

- Bob Mackenzie.

And there it is.  All that rant against the outcry from the fans who pay their dollars, kroners, etc. to support the NHL and their players is perfectly encapsulated in that little sentence by Mackenzie.

I feel so insulted.

The truth is there is this incredibly huge, and growing by leaps and bounds every day, disconnect between how hockey fans and media view crime and punishment in the NHL and how the league and those who comprise it

Good article, and the above quote is nailed on the head.

I like this one too (for explanation of the situations sake):
Campbell is the quintessential ‘old-time hockey’ guy. He knows the culture inside out. A GM can call him up after the game, vent like there’s no tomorrow, yell and scream, “F U” him seven ways from Sunday and Campbell, the old defenceman, will give it right back to the GM in spades.

When all is said and done, the general manager knows that if a week from now, one of his guys goes up in front in Campbell for some suspendable offence, the judge isn’t going to hold last week’s exchange against the GM or his player. That’s just the hockey way.

Funny how you can’t comment on any of TSN’s stories regarding this issue.

Well I checked six blogs and three did allow comments, including past Mckenzie blogs.

Standard translation… “If you don’t like it, tough shit.”

It’s too bad I’m a hockey addict because I (as a fan) feel ignored, frustrated, insulted and laughed at… yes, laughed at by the “powers that be” in hockey.  I’m supposed to pay for my “priviledge” to attend games, get Center Ice or NHL Gamecenter and buy all the merch I can.  Meanwhile, a bunch of clowns (owners) run by a midget Ringmaster (you know who) bring the Circus (NHL) to town for all to marvel at.  But don’t look under the tent Sonny because you might not like what you see.

I have cancelled Center Ice as a first step in my withdrawl and will stop buying merch and attending games unless the NHL starts to get it’s collective sh!t together.  I know, I know… waving at windmills…who cares?  I do dammit!  I do.

F*ck off and die.

Sincerely,

NHL is basically a bunch of cronies.  If they don’t like you, Ted Nolan for instance< you get blackballed.  Campbell should be replaced by a diverse disciplinary panel.  A former ref, a PA rep, a former GM and maybe a former European player or coach.  You need a lot of eyes on these hits etc.

Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail,

It really is time the NHL stop putting former players or general managers – of middling skills or otherwise – in all these executive positions because it’s leading to an inbreeding of thought (of which the cock-eyed All-Star Game proposal is just one more example).

The pipeline works for ownership, because it has been a way of gelding the NHL Players’ Association through its subtle message to would-be rabble-rousers that it’s better to play along with commissioner Gary Bettman than rock the boat if you want a job post-hockey. If it means a few boneheaded decisions are made that get some segments of the media all up in arms, well, who cares?
