Columbus Trades R.J. Umberger To Philadelphia For Scott Hartnell

Columbus press release below...

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired left wing Scott Hartnell from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for left wing R.J. Umberger and a fourth round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today.

Hartnell, 32, has registered 250 goals and 287 assists for 537 points with 1,452 penalty minutes and a cumulative +65 plus/minus rating in 953 career NHL games with the Flyers and Nashville Predators.  He has scored 87 power play and 48 game-winning goals, has 20 or more goals in seven of the last eight full NHL seasons, including a pair of 30-goal campaigns, and appeared in the 2012 All-Star Game.

“We are proud and excited to welcome Scott Hartnell to the Columbus Blue Jackets as he is the epitome of the type of player we want in our organization,” said Kekalainen.  “He is a talented, tough, hard-working player who brings valuable experience and leadership on and off the ice.  We believe he will fit in very well with our group and be an important part of our team moving forward.  We would also like to thank R.J. for his years of service to our club and extend our best wishes to him and his family.”

Ummm… I just don’t get this.  Here’s what I do know:

I’m not Hartnell’s biggest fan—he can disappear, has an entire effing charity named after the fact that he has the balance of a drunk toddler, but can also really pressure and create opportunity with his forecheck (when he feels like skating), good for 20-30G a year.  Also, pretty durable.  $4.75/yr cap.

RJ Umberger is more of a mystery to me… Slightly smaller cap it—$4.5/yr I think?  Same age, build… they seem like a similar type of player but with Hartnell getting more production.

Any CBJ fans (or anyone in the know) care to provide some insight?

I don’t understand the Flyers side on this trade.  Hart ell had good chemistry with Giroux and Umberger is about 4 years past his prime.

The Wings play Columbus the same number of times as they played Philly.

Just don’t understand the trade between division rivals. 2 teams want to give players different atmospheres? Weird
