from the Courier-Camden Post:
With nine days remaining until the start of training camp, Flyers general manager Bob Clarke said Tuesday he has reached the end of the line in negotiations with leading scorer Simon Gagne.
“We made him a pretty substantial offer and I’m not going to go up from that,” Clarke said on his first day back from a vacation in western Canada. “He can sit out, but I’ve never seen a player sit out and then have a good year.”
Gagne, who at 26 is in the prime of his career, is believed to be seeking a long-term contract of at least four years at more than $5 million a season. The Flyers would also like to lock up Gagne for four years, but at slightly more than $4 million a season.
“If we were fooling around trying to sign Simon to a low number that would be one thing,” Clarke said. “He’s not going to be paid like Peter Forsberg ($5.75 million), but it’s close.”
