CHL game ends in forfeit after 193 PiM

Just preseason, right? Whether it was retaliation for a dirty hit, or someone said something about the coach’s mom, it got ugly in an exhibition game between the Colorado Eagles and the Odessa Jackelopes.

The first two periods seemed like a typical minor league hockey game. A few fights, some goals…

Then the third period happened. 14 fighting majors handed out in the first 1:39, then the big one at 9:26 which resulted in Odessa captain Dave Van Drunen getting sucker punched by Brad MacMillen. The punch resulted in Van Drunen needing 5 plates and 18 screws to repair the damage.

MacMillen received 2 for instigating, 5 for fighting, 10 minutes and a game for instigating and another 10 for intent to injure.

Paul Gillis, coach of the Odessa Jackelopes, sent his team to the locker room, then informed the officials that they had forfeited the game.

Jackelopes owner Rick Gasser had this to say:

“I’m asking the league for a lifetime ban for MacMillan, at least 20 games for Mario and a season-long suspension for (Eagles assistant coach Greg) Pankewicz, because he was the one running the team that night while their coach, Chris Stewart, was watching the game from the stands to evaluate.”

This is the point where players have gone too far. Hockey fights are great. They get the whole crowd fired up, both teams fired up and the quality of the game improves. But when the cops get called and people are calling for lifetime bans and the emergency room has to make a stop at Home Depot to fix the damage, it’s not fun any more.

I have yet to find video of the actual fight, but there is a clip of the aftermath. When I saw the blood on the ice, I originally thought about the March 26 brawl, but now that I think about it, it’s a bit more like the ending of ‘Fargo’.

MacMillen is a dirty, filthy, talentless clown.  He was while he was in Fort Wayne for the past couple of seasons, and he still is now I see.

Mac is a repeat offender.  Just last year in the IHL he was suspended for 15 games because he left the penalty box to engage in a fight with Robin Big Snake (who left the box himself), and because in the process he literally tossed a linesman into the boards while said linesman was trying to send Mac back into the box.  The guy has no brains, and no self control whatsoever…

Guys like MacMillen need to be run out of minor hockey altogether.  Let them go up to the LNAH and kill someone on ice up there, if that’s what the bloodthirsty Quebecers want in their joke of a league up there, but get them the heck out of the actual HOCKEY leagues…

I hope the CHL is happy.  They’d spent the past couple of seasons gaining some respect and reputation as a real “AA” league quickly coming on-par with the ECHL, and even gaining NHL affiliations.  And then they go out this past offseason and absorb the old IHL teams (which brought their own baggage as a joke league), and now bring this type of thing back.  This is AAHL or SPHL-type of shenanigans, not an “AA” league that wants respect from the NHL and AHL.

Kudos to Gillis for pulling his team and refusing to allow anything else to happen.  Colorado is already one of the most-hated orgs in the CHL (partly because of their success), and this certainly won’t help that fact.

Pretty crazy, and only about 15miles from my house.  Also, Mario Joly (who was apparently involved in trying to pull some of the Odessa players off their bench) was involved in a riot here in Fort Collins this summer:

According to the article he even used to play for the Odessa Jackalopes (for 2 years).

This article also identifies his charges as misdemeanors, but when it happened I read that he was facing Felony assault in addition to the misdemeanors (the Coloradoan article identifies all charges as misdemeanors.  Then again, the Coloradoan is something of a running joke here in Ft. Collins).

Jeebus, I was at this game when Chris Ferraro broke his leg in a scrum and it’s tame compared to what happened here.  I mean that Wranglers game was one scrum, after-whistle cheap shot, and fight after another but this game was just dirty.

Colorado forward Brad MacMillan has been suspended 22 games for his match penalty for attempting to injure a player.

Colorado defenseman George Bradley has been suspended five (5) games for his actions during an altercation and has been fined an undisclosed amount of money for the same infraction.

Colorado defenseman Mario Joly has been suspended four (4) games for leaving the players bench.
