Warning:  Equip your tin foil hats, ladies and gentlemen.

So, think back to last offseason.  The Hawks signed Hossa to a contract that pays him until he’s 42.  The league kvetched about that and the Pronger contract, citing the familiar “circumvention of the spirit of the salary cap” line, investigated, and eventually did nothing.

Later on, the Hawks bounced a player back and forth between the minors and the NHL on a daily basis to keep his cap hit low (I found this link, not certain if it’s the player I remembered reading about:  http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2009/11/blackhawks-bickell-doing-the-rockford-shuffle.html).  This was clear use of a loophole.  Not necessarily exploitative, but clearly not intended cap management behavior.  You have to wonder if the league approved.  I would assume they would not.

Fast forward to the 2010 finals.  Toews, admittedly dynamic during most of the playoffs, registers only 3 points and no goals yet receives the Conn Smythe anyway.  I’m not going to look them up, but I’m sure this was recent enough that many of you remember the articles questioning Toews winning the trophy over more deserving teammates.  I believe Kane was the one most picked as more deserving (3g, 5a for the finals, including the cup clinching OT goal in g6).

Toews winning the Conn Smythe, however, gives the Hawks another 1.5 million dollar hickey for the 2010-2011 cap.  Do you think the league was unaware of this?

I’m not saying the league actively penalized the Blackhawks by giving Toews the Conn Smythe- it could very well be that Kane has the same bonus in his contract- but I wouldn’t put it past Bettman’s pettiness.  I know that the Conn Smythe is supposed to be given out based on hockey writer votes… but the results are, to the best of my recollection and a quick google search, not public.

So, yeah.  Good job, Gary.  You finally did something I approve of.
